I know it’s not expected for all engineers to reach E6, but I’m curious what the normal timeline is. Would doing this in 4 years be considered normal?
How do you know if someone is E6, are they automatically called Group PM?
You look at the scope of their work. Are they deciding what the whole team works on and supporting them in that? E6.
Why?
Took me 6 years but it’s way faster than average. Most of my E6 peers are older.
4 years is possible but it will be clear outlier. Median is never and average for people who got to E6 is probably 6-7 years.
From new grad?
Yes, from new grad. At 6-7 years it becomes clear if you are E6 material. Facebook is growing fast so your personal growth is rarely limited by team/project growth like in most slow growth companies. PS. Obviously bad manager/team can stunt growth, especially if you do not recognize it early.

There is no normal timeline for that.
But I would say it’s definitely not four, or even five.
