How many principals are there in Amazon?

Trying to do some quick and dirty math to calculate chances of promotion. But I want to clarify, it’s not the # of next level, it’s the # of openings. And you can have a slot for every person in your dept to get promoted, but if you suck, it won’t matter.

There were 550-600 a year or so ago, so this seems believable.

I recently checked the wiki page that gets updated daily by backend job so it's the right number. I don't remember the exact number. SDEs are around 25k

So if there's already a principal under the director, there is no more business need for another?
