What's the best way to move from a SDE role to a AI research role.
Currently I am a software developer in Alexa. I want to be involved in futuristic research projects.

Do some of your own experimental projects first, if hiring manager likes your work and passion you may get a chance..

I generally start to read case studies first of all so that I get ideas what are the real use cases of industry and what may be the related ideas, then I start building on top of those ideas.. i would start reading some great books and will start from there!

Move to an SDE role within Alexa ML or another ML team. Or go back to school for a top tier program MS or a PhD program if you want to be an Applied Scientist.

I am not aware of any, but given that orgs are always shifting there might be some now.

I'd imagine a lot of AI-type work (read: deep-learning) is happening in Core ML and AWS (ML API) teams. Look for roles there. Science roles would be difficult to land without a PhD, but you'll probably get some exposure as an SDE

I recommend UW's CLMS program. You can do that part time. There are no futuristic research projects on Alexa. It's more about applying the most basic techniques that work.
