I'm a newb PM L4 @amazon and within 6 weeks realized I need to move teams asap. I messaged a few pms on other teams and no one responded. What's the secret to applying to other teams? My current manager put me on a L6 project and I nearly burned out. The only way I learned that it was L6 was through a senior engineer who was not part of it and saw me struggling. I can't believe my manager threw me in a shark tank to test the waters. Amazon is a fucking wake up call to grads like me who were looking forward to working at FAANG. What's worse than a manager who doesn't have your back? I'm practically on a one way street to a PIP.
Project or Program?
It's a secret
What’s L6 project?
Multiple teams undefined requirements. I had to look it up too
When life gets tough, don’t say ‘why me?’ Say ‘try me’! Sounds like a great opportunity to step up and fast track to promotion OP
This is a normal experience at Amazon. Don’t expect other teams to be different.
How many hours are you working every week?
65
Just play the role and leverage as many peoples help as possible. Document your tasks and progress and roadblocks everyday, summarize it in regular emails to your stakeholders including manager. That'll help you a lot during PIP.
Good advice here.
Dude she just joined 6 weeks back and sacred or PIP. What can I think about
I wrote a five page document about this entire study from who owns what part and who didn't take ownership. The thing is, I'm really good at what I do. But an L6 project required a type of wisdom an L4 doesn't have no matter how good you are. How to negotiate and put your foot down, how to fix issues between teams that are technical. There are alot of learned lessons from this project. Ultimately I feel like I would have learned this anyway a few months down the line. I should not be afraid to loose my job after 6 weeks of being converted. It's just terrible management.
Refer to the role description and make sure you cover the stuff within L4 scope really well and does some of the L5 stuff. At Amazon it's all about covering your own ass by documenting everything in email communication.
Why do you think you are going to get PIP? Your experience sounds like a typical project experience at Amazon. It may not feel normal to a new hire, but it will feel normal after some experience. I spent my first 3 months at Amazon thinking I would be fired. After that I got my feet under me and became a bit more comfortable with the chaos
do u know if L4 level of PM exists at Amazon or it just starts only at L5? (product or program) Thank u!
