Recently, I've gotten an opportunity to transfer to a different department with interesting work. I'm a little hesitant to go since the manager is very young and inexperienced. He is very aggressive on charting his career so he is in the position he is in now. How is it like to work for someone like that? Does age gap matter a lot when it's your manager?
I’m personally indifferent wrt age. Across history there’s been kids leading countries at really young age. I’ve personally met young people with the maturity and skills that folks with 15 yoe could only dream about. What matters is always the same: is the manager able to coordinate your team? Can you learn from that person? Is (s)he willing to shield you from crap? Is (s)he able to recognize your work and showcase it in the right forums? If the answer is yes to the above, then who cares if the manager is 20 or 50?
Those are pretty good points. Thanks for sharing.
It's all about your relationship and how well you work together to further each other's goals.
Below 18 is too young. Above 18 everything goes
Correct answer.
Seconded.
Hey look, age discrimination. Age doesn't matter. I've had managers 10 years older than me not know what they're doing and my current manager who is younger than me is great. Stop looking at people's ages and look at their accomplishments.
Looking at someone’s motives should be fair game though
Except OP is extremely biased and reducing his potential bosses accomplishments to "he's only a manager because he's aggressive". Kind of a dick statement. Maybe the manager is there because he's competent and OP is incompetent?
