What happened to bringing back jobs for Michigan, Ohio residents. 45 didn’t do anything and GM which is making billions took away 15k jobs. So much for chanting USA???

And Fox covers it as it not a big deal

It’s what happens when you don’t pull Stalinist tactics of mandating car companies to build cars no one wants for CAFE standards the other large polluting countries don’t abide by. I presume in your world, you prefer a centrally planned government that mandates making undesirable and uneconomic cars so you can then hand out bailouts and appear a hero, while simultaneously engaging in crony green capitalism with your donors. Well done, it’s difficult to be pro-Stalin.

Production is moving to China because Chinese people buy small cars.

Why would you make the car in the US when no one buys American small cars/sedans in the US?

They are making the crossovers overseas as well because they share chassis/production lines with sedans.

This is basic math regardless of tariffs - China buys 2x the cars/sedans that American consumers do. You then export from your primary consumption geo because of economies of scale.

The tariff impact is about 1% of the value of a new car ($300 of $36K).

Keep searching bud, but your logic is empty.

American sedans aren’t popular specifically. They haven’t been for about 40 years, but they kept making them because of CAFE standards + union rules. Talk about business unfriendliness.

And the American car/sedan market is now about 1/4 the size of China. This is basic economics. When the American car market was the largest, it made sense to make them here and export them. It doesn’t any more.

Better to let GM and Ford Focus on making profitable vehicles like their trucks and SUVs.

Tariffs of 1% of the value of the car aren’t going to be remotely close to the deciding factor.

This is manufacturing cars near where they are consumed. It costs more to ship cars over the ocean to China than the impact of the steel tariffs.

The tariffs are $300 per car. US car companies have been losing thousands of dollars per car/sedan for decades. This was a business decision to make cars closer to where they are purchased.

What other tariffs would cause GM or Ford to relocate, and how does that compare to the $3-4K per car they’ve been losing on small cars/sedans for decades just to meet CAFE standards (the answer is a v small percentage).

How about China’s policy of forced IP that means no company with real IP will locate there? Opening up of financial services? Government subsidies of state run companies? Nah, didn’t think so. Only jobs moving there are manual labor + min wage jobs low on the skill set range.

There’s no place better in the world to do business than USA. It’s why we are the wealthiest most innovative country in the planet.

And the end goal has always been stated as zero tariffs. Nice to see an American leader negotiating for American long-term interests.

lol Kudos to fox though. ‘Get them while they are not hot’. If this had happened in the Obama era, the headline would be - Obama to personally prepare exit packages for GM, as company lays off thousands of people, while he is still hiding his Kenyan birth certificate

This kind of thing is why Trump focuses on immigrants and other scapegoats. Don’t look at the board members behind the curtain... the economic hardships that people will experience from this are obviously due to migrant “others” and Trans people using pronouns!!!!!

Nationalism is offered when countries don’t have anything real in terms of a better life to offer people.

You think Ford made a decision in a matter of weeks that hypothetically temporary tariffs are why they decided to completely shift their corporate strategy for the US market? Do you work in business?

Production is moving to China because Chinese people buy small cars and Americans do not.

When Ford or Gm move the F150 or Chevy Tahoe production to China, give me a call.

The trade war is so the Chinese stop stealing IP. I’m willing to make the tradeoff of short term pain for long term gain. Their stock market is down a lot further than ours.

Vehicles will be made in countries that buy the product. Chinese buy 13 million cars/sedans per year; the US is about 4 million.

Have you ever worked in business? When you have a product with significant logistical costs, you manufacture closest to your primary customer base. That is China for cars/sedans.

So in your mind, you would rather manufacture 17 million cars in the US and ship 13 million of them to China than manufacture 17 million cars in China and ship 4 million to the US?

Yep, but it makes sense to manufacture where your largest market is. That is China.

The whole idea is to get a level playing field. The bullshit forced IP, state subsidies, and closed markets like financial services that China has run for decades needs to end. I’m fine with a little short term pain if we can end those inequities.

  • Trump never understood why GM and Ford moved small car manufacturing to Mexico. It’s because Mexico has better trade agreements with other countries that buy those small cars. Everything is about VAT and Tariffs and less about cheaper labor. It’s a cheaper net to build them there and export them to all markets than to build them here and face VAT/tariffs against the US. The more volatile it is, the more companies will move manufacturing to where it’s safer for business.

    That’s what Trump doesn’t get.
