Has anyone been offered a job working IT without having a degree. I'm looking for a career change from Staffing. Everything I know is self taught (Google is your friend) from general PC repair to troubleshooting. I'm the go to resource in our office since our remote IT department isn't great. Just don't have the time or money to go back to school.
Very much possible, I know couple of people who went to Coding dojo (Seattle branch) and landed jobs at Microsoft
What’s your location
Raleigh NC
Plenty of opportunity... how’s your dev and Linux skills
Yes I did, started as a BSA/PM. Moved into a SQL developer role then kept adding a little bit at a time to my skill set. Just have to look at what a full stack or senior dev needs to know or be able to do then position yourself to acquire those skills.
I make six figures and never finished a degree. All self taught
As of today I'm at my third IT company with an associates degree from a terrible automotive tech school. If you search hard enough you can find something, just know it may be more difficult without a degree or certs. Network as much as you can, preferably in person, and be persistent. It's worked out pretty well for me so far.
What's your age range? It depends on your goals and the unique skills you have/aquire. A degree is not required for a good paying job; it just makes it easier. IMO, college is just a test of how much BS you can deal with. The people I know without degrees hustle a little harder but do well.
34. I've applied to entry level IT jobs in the past and tried to highlight my self taught skills in a cover letter but have no real work experience to showcase on my resume.
Landed a security engineering job as a sophomore in college. I have a market value salary for the area and my employer has offered raises upon completion of my degree. It is doable, show you are making progress whether it be bootcamp/uni/certs and that you are capable to do what's asked of you.
yes. certifications and talent are just as valuable.
100%. I think the hardest part is landing your first position as you won’t have any experience to put on your resume. I’d suggest looking into web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL). Your Linux experience is a great foundation. If you have the coin to spare, try getting a website up and running on a cheap host. You will get some real hands on experience getting a website up and running which will increase your value as a candidate.
I think I could definitely afford a cheap domain name. Thanks for the suggestion
Look into boot camps, could be a good start..
