In a layoff scenario, are ICs or managers more vulnerable?
It depends. If it's restructuring then manager. If it's pure cost cutting, ic
Both are but I've seen very few manager layoffs as compared to ICs in AMD. But again we have very few people managers..most of them are tech leads with reports..
In my experience IC vs manager doesn’t really make a difference, what truly matters is the impact of the work your team is performing vs how strategically important that work is for the company. Obviously the ratio will always favor managers as there will always be more ICs than managers, with the exception of small-ish startups where flattening an org that was previously starting to scale up is fairly common.
Is Magic Leap laying off???
No, there have been some terminations due to performance. I’m just wondering given all the pundits talk of approaching recession in our overall economy.
Are these similar to PIPs at Amazon. I was interested in a role at Magic Leap but wanted to understand the culture a bit beforehand.
% of profit you are responsible for determine your layoff odds
From what I observed over the years at different companies, managers are the first to go.
Feels like It’s always us managers. We’re overhead.
Managers don’t build things, ICs do. There’s your answer.
The ones who are easily replaceable.
