India food?

Yesterday I went to Indian restaurant in Sunnyvale (Vegetarian Thali place) with our team. I am little confused about this type of Indian restaurants. They did not have anything else to order, It was like buffet However servers were serving food so not 100% buffet. Anyways, my observation/complain is about food they serve. It seems they served lots of side dishes or appetizers with flat bread and later rice However I did n’t find anything worth calling main dish as far as nutrition/protein goes. Even vegetarian restaurants serves tofu (protein) as main dish with enough quantity to satisfy your appetite. My question to Indian guys, Do you go to this kind of Indian restaurant for light meal.. I have to go McDonad’s and get big mac to stratify my appetite after visiting Indian restaurant.

We eat carbs, vegetarians are not much into proteins

Um. That’s not how diets work.

Lentils/beans gets you the protein however not as much as tofu. I agree, it’s pretty carb intensive

Tofu is #1 enemy of testosterone... but there’s enough tofu lobbies to say soy products don’t impact everyone the same way.

Why would you go to McDonalds if you want nutritious food 😂. Sambhar/Dal (lentil soup) is loaded with protein.

Indian here. Dal actually has less protein than lean meat, it's more carb heavy.

I agree McDonald’s is not good choice.

Thali...and u r calling it light meal 😂😂😂

It’s a lot of carbs. For most of us it’s a shock when people order “rice” as side in the US. For us, it’s the main dish :)

Thalis are actually pretty well balanced. The lentil dishes are loaded with protein as are some of the appetizers that are made with lentil flour. In fact even some of our desserts have lentils and grains that are higher in protein than some traditional American desserts (ice cream or cake).

Our main and side dishes are mostly carbs, Especially South Indian food. Rice is cheap so people fill up on it.

Indian food is designed to be balanced, variety of vegetables along with lentils and some carbs with salad as sides. Unfortunately its skill and time intensive to prepare. The idea behind the variety of things is that nutrients get absorbed in the body better when consumed in combinations. Also overconsumption or gluttony has the same value in indian culture as the west = sin. Lentils are an incomplete protein. Some lentils are equal in weight to chicken in protein content when uncooked, but reduce to third when cooked and don’t get absorbed unless consumed with a complimentary carb. The idea of have the flavors of sweet, sour, spices, aromatic foods is because indian is the land of kama sutra and the food should stimulate all taste buds and sense of smell at the same time for an orgasmic effect. Thats why the thali has many dishes and they are all different and you’re supposed to eat them one bite after the other. This is why Indians tend to be dissatisfied with any other cuisine and why a lot of non-indians can find indian food sensually invasive or overwhelming. Unfortunately the Indian restaurants have evolved from British interpretations of indian food and not from indian food itself leaving home cooked indian food still a mystery to the restaurant world and consequently to the world food connoisseur.

Restaurants such as Thali are a type of buffet where price is fixed and you can eat as much as you want. Only difference is that food is served to you. Now, since price is fixed, they make more profit if you eat less. To achieve that, these places keep majoritily high carbs and fatty food which makes you feel full pretty fast. Serving you protein enriched food doesn't help them much. I personally like to stay away from 'all you can eat' places ..indian or western.
