I really hate it when interviewers taking notes all the time. I always listen closely to what candidates say when I'm on the other end. Take minimal notes and finish my feedback right after the interview. Happened multiple times that I said we can use A but have to be careful about B in this case, which could be further solved by C. And after 5 seconds where I already started the next topic the interviewer asked what if we have B? What do you think?
Sorry but... that’s just the way of things. Detailed notes. It’s good practice to take detailed notes in the moment.
But his point was that some interviewers are not able to follow along, maybe because they are too distracted by note-taking.
I hope you can achieve true concurrency. I feel really bad if I miss anything shining candidates say. Maybe even worse that I didn't hear something I expect them to cover and write that disappointment in my feedback...
If you’re a frequent interviewer and find yourself in a lot of meetings, the chances of being able to submit feedback a)right after an interview and b) keeping candidates straight can be quite a challenge. As far as people not keeping up - do you think it jeopardized your interview in any way? Maybe you should checkpoint before moving on to the next point?
In many companies interviewers have to provide written detailed feedback. I'm fine with notes. If it helps them, why should it bother me?
In this day and age I have no idea why they don't just record the audio during interview and use it to take notes at their own pace offline. This note taking during interview makes no sense at all
Because then they’d have to re-listen to your interview, who has time for that?
Also privacy issues
Looks like it's current norm. Still doesn't make sense to me though. What I do is to take brief notes on highlights only (good and bad). Well you can argue then it'll make candidates nervous every time I write lol.
You need data. If you’re only going high level then you won’t have the necessary data. At the end all you’ll have is a vague sense of like or dislike for the candidate (which can be dangerous) and whether they answered your question. You can’t deep dive into it objectively after the fact which is the most important part of the process.
For me it's a catch-22, I will not remember any details if I don't take notes but then I can not listen while I type. So I end up taking some notes while missing out bits and pieces of what people say
So basically you're telling us that you suck at both note taking as well as listening. You shouldn't be interviewing!
Hahaha true but my note taking is exquisite just can't do it while listening. I can listen ok unless my mind starts drifting and start zoning out or think about other stuff.
In Netflix they took so many notes and asked so many personal questions that I think they can write a biography of mine.
😂😂
Stay clear of amazon then 😂
Man it's much more common than you think...
True. I interviewed at Amazon and they were taking notes like crazyyyyy.. I was like this tells me documentation (aka artifacts) are very imp here.. I prefer creating good old ppt decks so declined the offer 😛
