Financial Samurai recently wrote that $350k is barely middle class for a family of 4 in the Bay Area. How many of you think this is true? https://www.myroadtofire.com/blog/is-350k-a-year-really-middle-class-in-a-big-city-response-to-financial-samurais-take
If you define middle class by the middle third then apparently not if you look at income distributions in SF.
350k is below the poverty line my dude
When I was complaining about my really low TC $230k, everyone was saying it’s a decent TC. I know I struggle making ends meet. Definitely below poverty line.
Holy shit that article and these comments are so out of touch...
Where does $350k rank for you?
I became upper middle class from poor just by moving from Bay Area to Austin 😂
And I am a millionaire if I move to Vietnam. But you have to live in Austin. :)
Austin has pretty much everything Bay Area offers. Good luck on your Vietnam
350k is poverty
This guy wants to ditch umbrella policy? YOLO. Umbrella is a must.
Rich: > 1 M Upper Middle Class: > 700K Middle Class: > 450K Lower Middle class: > 300K Poor: > 100K Homeless: > 10K You will be dead: < 5K Fyi - The duration you can survive without income with same lifestyle defines your class
Equivalent to 270-280k in Seattle which is considered really good pay here. Probably top 20% in tech.
I love Dogan but that article and chart is a bit misleading. he fully funds 401k, savings, 529, cars, multiple vacations, kid schooling, etc. That's a nice life right there. It's all about your acquisition cost of main living expense. If you can keep that moderate then 350k will go far.
Depends where in the Bay Area. The Bay Area is hyper stratified. In Palo Alto, 350 is probably even below middle class. In South Fremont mission area it’s middle class. In Dublin it’s upper middle.
What about Sunnyvale?
Sunnyvale —> poor sob
