Is Facebook going to be the next Yahoo in next 5 years?

Yahoo in 2010 was a hot tech dumpster and pretty much died down in 2016. Is Facebook the next Yahoo after worst 2018, regulation issues and social media dying the slow death?

Facebook will figure things out and become a tech darling again in 3 years.

Why are Glassdoor posters so obsessed with Facebook? And why is it I always see poor polls from them?

Instagram has more users than snap and Twitter combined. Fb also has truck loads of cash and still makes tons of money. It's gonna be a loooong time before they turn into yahoo if ever

It’s not clear regulation is bad for Facebook, it might make it harder for new startups to compete and as a result make it easier for Facebook to maintain the status quo. Regulation will almost certainly make it harder for Chinese firms to compete in the US with Facebook. Facebook is pretty entrenched, what would it take for someone to displace it?

Until there is a viable alternative that is gaining popularity, Facebook will stay king. Their stock price is an emotional downturn not a logical one.

A lot of people are becoming tired of using FB these days. Prob it will take little longer than 10yrs for it to become irrelevant

Nope, all the whackadoo content it gives an easy voice to is toxic. Every fourth or fifth post I see is extreme politics, on top of the posts related to everyone putting their best, most unrealistic foot forward to present their life as some sort of magical unicorn of rainbows. It’s worse than Blind around election season and pretty bad even when not. If it was just full of nice family and friend pictures that would be different but I have to wade through the muck to see those and it’s not really worth it. Combine that with all the privacy issues and it just seems like a giant waste of time.

Fb doesn't create content or pick the friends and pages you follow. You can change these to make it valuable or fun for you?

Facebook adjusts the content it shows people via your algorithm. I can go about deleting and hiding friends and pages (I did that and your company did that to pages to just about the full extent), but think about it from a normal user’s standpoint... they want to interact and have fun with their friends that are their age... you know, what made Facebook popular in the first place. The disparity in what you are willing to share and in basic opinions differs pretty significantly across generations, so what do you think is happening with the youngest generation? They are creating complex filters on FB to share only with a select audience or they are moving because it’s more fun and faster to share anything with their friends on a new platform? I would bet most are just going to move. So you’ve lost the youngest generation because of that.

You’ve lost me because I don’t really care to spend many hours tweaking my feed to be something different than it was and dealing with the fallout of unfriending family and friends or spending the time hiding them.

You’ve lost my parents because I don’t post anymore and the youngest generation in my family doesn’t either so they don’t look as often or at all... so what’s the point? Who is this social network for anymore? Who cares about it?

By the way, I’ve never been happier cutting social media almost entirely out of my life and just interacting with people in the real world. That alone is worth abandoning all of it.

In all fairness though maybe I’m wrong. If I’m wrong, then FB more than MySpace or Friendster is better positioned to climb out of the scandal and user base hole than any prior social network. If I’m right though, if I were Zuckerberg then I would be looking around for the exit so I can start clean with something totally different or just be wildly wealthy long term. I hear Tom, with only what a fraction of what Mark has, is having a good life.

Facebook is the next AOL. I still use Facebook and I feel like I have @aol address. Younger people moved to Instagram, whatsapp, etc. Yet, FB company will still be a major player in the business of connecting people.

I feel Facebook is more likely to rebrand themselves completely before going into the dumpster fire. They still have a lot of great tech.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they do something similar to Google and simply make a parent org like Alphabet

I don't think Facebook has that many diverse interests to become alphabet.

I agree with the rebranding. Eventually they will not be tied to their core product and start diversifying. Already they have a younger audience in Instagram. In the next five years, that audience will mature and will start to make buying decision through Instagram.

And whatsapp is a very strong player around the world, espeically in the developing markets. In those markets, as broadband infrastructures become better, more people will start to find ways to grow their businesses through whatsapp. It will become a massive cash cow if they make the correct product decisions.

In the US, surprising amount of people talk bad about Facebook, but love Instagram. Seems like the rebranding is already in place.
