My entire cousin clan, some of my friends and coworkers are us citizens and permanent residents of Asian descent. I always tell them why the hell are you wasting your life in these stable companies? Go join a startup and make millions. Agreed not every startup translates into millions of dollar for you through luck. But still the opportunities are endless. Question for Asian folks who became us citizen or permanent residents a while ago as to what other benefit you see for the same? Apart from just the h1 visa sword not hanging on your head anymore. I could easily join tons of good companies if I had green card or citizenship. So is there any other true benefit?
Yes worth it, you get taken care of when you're old and you don't have to go into hiding if you're laid off
Thanks
More like 1% of startups translates into you making millions.
The risk adjusted rate of returns for large companies is absolutely higher than startups. Sure, some startups hit a home run and you’d make millions, but some people also win the lottery
Start up or otherwise, I have never felt the sense of "freedom" like I did when I got greened. Totally worth it.
There is way more to life than a coding job! Sure they pay well, but even at Google and Facebook, the average swe isn't doing any cutting edge research. As a US Citizen, you could take time off between your jobs and travel the world. A more powerful passport doesn't hurt. You can pursue different careers that are way more interesting than being a software engineer--FBI, CIA, NSA etc You can pursue a PhD in areas that the government will give you grants Easy to get loans/grants for education I'm honestly surprised someone would ask the benefits of being a citizen?
I’m a citizen but I’m not sure it’s an advantage at all when it comes to job searching...
Specifically if you are in IT industry and almost 70-80% companies needs your skill?
I am a Canadian citizen working in the US for over 8 years now in 3 different companies - first on TN then on H1B. I still want to get my GC (will pretty soon). But I am not quite sure if I would be an American citizen in the near future (I have no plan to give up my Canadian citizenship; so maybe a dual-citizen in the long term?)
You can pack your bags today and travel to more than 100 countries without worrying about getting a visa. I like that benefit the most!
Interesting as someone who was born in the United States I never thought of that. So you're saying if you were a citizen you would try a bunch of startup companies? I think I see your point (i.e. not forced to leave) I guess I just never thought of that way. Thanks for making me think of it in a different way.
I guess there is a factor of “grass being greener on the other side” involved here. But I imagine it’s not all that easy even without the visa constraints.
