A recruiter reached out to me and wanted to set up an interview. In the chance I get a job offer from them, I have no intention of taking it because I very much enjoy where I work now. However, I wouldnt mind a raise so could I use the job offer and pretend thst I might leave to try to get a raise? Or is this seen as a dick move? TC: 57k
Leverage what you’re doing for the company rather than outside offers
It's not a dick move. Although you might ruin your relationship at work.
I agree, it is not a dick move, but it will most definitely ruin his current work status. The moment they need to lay people off, his name will be at the top.
They might actually let you go so be prepared for that
Damn good point. My manager right now really likes me but for the sake of not being an asshole for everyone, I’ll probably just decline the interview.
Going on the interview still might not be a bad idea just to keep your interview skills fresh
Why not just say "I really like it here and I want to stay but I need more money. Is there anything you can do to help me?"
57k? Are you a SWE? If so, you're really missing out on a lot of money. Do you like your job so much that you'd give up tens of thousands of dollars to keep working there?
I’m not SWE. I’m an entry level BI analyst in a low CoL city
57k means probably L2? It's much more important to choose the job you're learning the most in. If you show you're considering other offers they might not give you new and bigger opportunities limiting your growth potential
Well, here's the flipside...are you ready for your current employer to wish you good luck on your new endeavor? If you have a case, you're doing x, y, z more than you were when hired, if you've outgrown your initial job offer for this position, yes...by all means, ask. If you've asked and feel unhappy about your compensation structure, by all means, step out and take a look. You could find something better for more compensation. There's also no problem giving your current company a "Last Chance" offer, as it were. Ultimately look at why you're even thinking about this...do you value your abilities higher than your employer does? Are you just wanting a bump because someone else less-deserving got one? Etc... There's some risk inherent in playing this game, just be aware of the negative outcomes you may face...but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try, especially if you feel you have good reason to deserve a bump.
Very good point. I never thought of it this way.
First time to see TC this low.
Lol, you must be coastal then
I’m not in SWE and live in a stupidly low CoL city in the midwest
As in any negotiation, the strongest position is to be able to walk away from the table. Get a better offer at a company you would join and then try to leverage that. Or just move, after you got an offer elsewhere they won't trust you anymore.
No one would ever know so depends on how you feel about it. Continuing to interview is good practice but wasting people’s time generally is not. Can you ask for a raise without additional leverage?
