Is it crazy to leave Airbnb for Google for approximately the same TC?

Google has been my dream company since I could remember and I recently got an offer (non-eng) doing strategy there that I’m more interested in than in my current role at Airbnb. They didn’t downlevel me but the TC isn’t much more than at Airbnb although Google’s stocks are liquid. Input? Google L4 offer (final and negotiated): $130k base $45k GSU ($180k / 4 years) $15k signing 15% bonus TC: $210k Commute: 1-1.5 hours SF -> MTV via google bus. I can move closer once my lease in SF is up in 5 months. Current Airbnb L4 TC: $140k base $27k RSU ($110k / 4 years) expecting $11k refresh 15% bonus TC: $197k Commute: 20 minutes walking SF->SF YOE: 5.5

You can always go back to airbnb once the commute tires you.

From your experience do people often boomerang to Airbnb and is the commute really that bad?

Apple industry Feb 15, 2019

Move to google if that’s where you really want to be. The commute is painful but since you can relocate in 5 months, it’s worth moving. Check if google can wait for 5 months. Also, google usually offers to pay for breaking your lease, so check if’s part of your offer. If it is part of your offer, you can move asap.

Stay until after IPO

Airbnb LeetSheit Feb 15, 2019

It's not going to make difference.

Your stock can worth more? Are’t they?

AppDynamics c-137.rick Feb 15, 2019

The amount of time you are giving up to commute isn't worth the additional 13k. It means you view your free time as worth on $21/hr

Airbnb dfevxkls OP Feb 15, 2019

Yeah the commute is a concern but I’m okay with temporarily suffering because my lease is up in 5 months

AppDynamics c-137.rick Feb 15, 2019

You're still undervaluing your free time compared to your effective hourly rate at the new job by a factor of 2. My numbers are also generous and not even worst case. If you think giving up 3 hours a day to be trapped on a bus is okay then go for it. I'd rather have the freedom to be doing other things with my personal time

$45K GSU? That seems really low.

Airbnb dfevxkls OP Feb 15, 2019

Yeah, non-eng/non-tech so $180k over 4 years

VMware crabss Feb 15, 2019

Did you negotiate for more TC?

Which strategy team? Is it GBS?

Microsoft MgIr74 Feb 15, 2019

That commute blows, don’t do it.

Google VROC85 Feb 15, 2019

Go for it. Having Google experience and tenure will be helpful in all your future career. Even though in the end you may get disappointed and eventually switch over, the experiences you will get are still worth it imo.

What org? Surprised at TC

Airbnb dfevxkls OP Feb 15, 2019

Is it low for non-eng? Ops
