I'm newish to this company and we went on a company lunch. This white girl who used to work for the company and has many friends here, joined us too. All the new people (after she had left) introduced themselves to her over the table, including me. Her response was "I'll remember you because you look different." I was confused how to react so just noded. But it did not sound like a positive thing to me. Talked to my gf in the evening and she thinks it was racist. What do you guys think? I'm in Texas if that makes a difference. PS: Me looking different was definitaly about color, there was no confusion there. She wasn't rude otherwise throughout the lunch. TC: Peanuts 🥜 ( < 100k)
Do you actually look different from everybody else?
I'm the only brown guy in the company. Everybody else is white. Only in that sense
I guess it could be racist, but its a fact you are probably the easiest to remember on an all white crowd
I’d say say ignorant rather than racist
That's what I thought too, but my gf said what if she said that to a black guy?
“what if she said that to a black guy” Still ignorant. I’d like to remind you the definition of racism: “noun - antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.”
🙄 maybe you are shorter? Maybe you are taller? Maybe you have a beard or mustache? Not everything is a race issue. Not all race issues are worth burning someone down over. Let some shit go.
No it was definately about color. And I did let it go. Just curious to settle the debate between me and my gf
Possibly a bias, but not necessarily racist unless you have more evidence.
In other words she said she won’t remember the rest of them, because they all look the same hmm
Haha I like that 🤣
I mean if she didn’t follow up by saying nasty things to you I think it’s okay... I mean in all fairness if she just met 20 people she may have been trying to be funny, could have been a bit of awkwardness , not a big deal.
She didn't say anything nasty afterwards. But there were only 4 new guys including me
I did give her the benefit of the doubt and noded along
Not worth your time to attribute things to malice when it could’ve gone either way.
Wisest advice I've got from blind. Thanks :)
It's not racist. To be clear this comment bothers me, but it's still in the benign territory. It'd escalate if she act surprised that "Your English is SO GOOD". It'd escalate more to the dangerous zone if she's like "Are there elevators in India?"
OP is Indian? How so?
Yes I am. I don't know how he guessed it though.
Whether it was racist really depends on the TC of the individual
Don't know how it makes a difference, but ill obey Blind's rules. Updated post.
If you have the TC of the other parties that will help give a more accurate calculation
She seems to be dumb. Not rascist.
Hmm interesting. Some people in my company have hinted that.
It depends on your perception!
Thanks Mr Plato
But I did vote for yes based on my perception
