Jump or stay at Google? (L3, 1.5YOE, 180k TC)

I’m likely to be promoted next cycle to L4, and I expect that this will bring my Google TC to around 220k (hopefully). But I see all these posts here about L4s getting $300k etc. Should I start applying to other companies now to increase TC? I love my team and I vibe with my coworkers (Mountain View office), and so my only big concern is that I would end up on a bad team at Facebook or Twitter or whatever. At the same time, I do care a lot about TC and I want to have a few million dollars sooner rather than later (my single mom worked her ass off for me the last 20 years and I’m going to make sure she retires into a beautiful house). What is the best way to maximize TC? Apply now? Apply after promotion? Don’t leave at all? What type of number should I be expecting if I were to leave to be, say, an E4 at Facebook in 4 months? Thank you for your help.

Having an extra offer in hand brings leverage even if you don’t really intend to take the role. Also might be possible to jump and come back at a higher level but probably depends on interview performance. Good luck bless your heart for lookin out for your mums. Cheers mate

E4 can go as much as 160Base, 80Stock, 10%. Joining could be 50. Try to complete 2 yrs. Even if you interview in a couple of weeks, decision and all formalities would take 6-8 weeks. So better to wait till 2 yrs mark. Also, thats the highest FB can go on E4. Pretty sure they won't turn up with these numbers easily.....

Don’t go by TCs floating around on Blind. If you are happy with team abs org stay and aim for the promo. Always remember a known devil is better than an unknown one. You might get a lot more money but what is the use if you wouldn’t be able to spend time with your mom.

Leave blind, TCs here aren't real (inflated). Focus on work and learning, money will follow you.

There real ( I just posted mine above) but I doubt they are they common. I probably wouldn’t be posting if I got a bad offer compared to what I saw on blind

The ramp in compensation continues to amaze me. It took me from 1999 to 2014 to go from $45k to $185k, and 2014 to now to get to $600+k. The TC will come. Like others have said, focus on being happy, learning, and growing. You'll still have lots of time to worry about TC later in life. FWIW, I was happiest at $140k TC. I'd paid off my loans and didn't yet have a kid. I had a job that I enjoyed with flexible hours. My wife and lived in a 1 bed apt in the city and could generally afford to do what we wanted when we wanted.

Curious where you’re seeing the biggest increase in TC. Was it from stacking refreshers or have you seen an appreciable increase in salary? I have similar YOE though the last 10 have been in early stage startups so I was severely underpaid.

I would wait at least until the promotion, so that you can come back at L4 without an interview if things don't work out elsewhere. Also, 2yoe would make a better case for L4 than 1.5 yoe. levels.fyi should provide good reference points on recent L4 offers. But think 300k is beyond the max for many places.
