Was offered an L5 position at Amazon for what should be an L6 role. Nearly 10 years experience and proven track record for the role. Are levels negotiable at AWS?
Counter offer?
Meaning ask for one?
Very common. Unfortunately, non-negotiable. The interview loops decides to hire at a certain level - it’s not something that the hiring manager (or anyone in the company) can do anything about after the fact. You’d need to re-interview at L6. Did you ask the level of the interview beforehand?
So frustrating. Interview at L6, “pass,” but get offered “high,” L5. What does that even mean?
It means the interviewers didn’t feel that you raised the L6 bar but you did raise the L5 bar. Amazons hiring philosophy is you should be better than 50% of employees at that level to be hired into it.
Is it advisable to ask level of role before interview ?
Of course
I did ask about the level prior to the interview.
Super common. External hire as L6 is far harder than external hire as T5 at G or FB because L6s only make up around 5% of SDEs at Amazon. Bar raisers literally make up excuses to downlevel L6s to L5, which usually results in an offer reject.
From what I’ve researched, it’s also impossible to level up within 1-2 years?
You work at domo. Take the offer.
Hahahaha! Touché. BUT, I’m not running away for the wrong offer.
Reject the offer and re interview in a year or 2.
Don’t take L5 offer. Amazon’s head is just too high these days because of the stock growth. Until a few years back no one even considered amazon as their employer. It’s all stock growth in their heads that’s talking.
No, not negotiable.
