Laid off from General Motors

I got laid off in the spree of General motors firing people. I worked as a Data Analyst and the sad part is that I had recently switched from another company to work for General motors. I need to have job to maintain my visa status.

I am a recent graduate and have 3 years of experience. Willing to relocate anywhere in US.

I would really appreciate referrals or any piece of advice. I request no trolls please cause it’s been tensing for me as is.

  • This might sound dumb as I realise it's technically it's own company now, but would it benefit at all if you applied at cruise?

      Are you talking about cruiseautomation?

I wouldn't mind applying for positions there provided they don't have any obligation.
i recently got a call from Maven and similarly I don't think I will have any problem there

We have separate hiring if thats what youre asking? And we werent affected by GM layoffs. Afaik, we’re still hiring aggressively. Unfortunately i cant provide a referral atm but if there are any other Cruisers here, they might be willing to.

Get a Consultant ASAP who can transfer your visa, getting an offer letter takes at least 1-2 months. Good luck with your search

I hope GM goes belly up, as they killed my beloved SAAB brand and did not allow it to be saved by bidding potential investors. Crash and burn, GM.

Regarding your situation, my condolences, stay strong.

Why not relocate to Canada and kill your visa issues in one stroke? What is so forbidding about Canada?
    Jan 19 5
    • General Motors amy_k
Because it will take some time

Oh... but you're willing to be a visa slave for 50 or more years. Ok.

No, I'm the only one who's actually offering a viable solution. The OP didn't give any indication of having known or thought about the Canada option, and just dismissing it as "taking too much time". Well, if OP doesn't get a job in 2 months, they will lose their status anyway. Applying for Canadian PR is something they have control over, but being laid off isn't. You're deceiving yourself and the OP by pretense of "empathy", which does not help in any way. How are you helping the OP by your show of empathy? Did it get them a new job? You are showing your own lack of civility and intelligence by attacking me with insults while putting on a show of impotent "empathy".

I applied for PR within 1 month. Applying is really easy and simple. Clearly you know nothing about this topic and you're the one spouting bs. Where did I say not to try for new jobs? Who says op can't do both in parallel? In the end I don't care... I'm not emotionally invested in OP like you seem to be. I'm giving a potential long-term solution with a relatively easy path. You think just by giving a referral you are solving their problems. What if their h1b transfer doesn't get approved in time? I've been through all of this. Clearly you're the one with verbal and mental diarrhea babbling about things you have zero knowledge about. Take better care of yourself.

And what will you do when the next layoff cycle comes, and the same thing happens again? As the saying goes "insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result". This describes the vast majority of h1b Indians. Anyway, good luck and take care!

You sound like you’re in a tough spot, my condolences. First off beware of predatory LinkedIN recruiters. Start taking any free web training you can get to bolster your resume. Maybe consider some quick contract to code work until you sort things out?
