After a lot of prep and advice I found on here, I was able to work up the nerve and interview in big tech. Soon I’ll be starting at Amazon as an L6, TC 370 in Seattle.

Thanks Blind.

5 years at Amazon and so far I never cried at my desk, never made anyone cry at their desk, and never saw anyone cry at their desk.

I guess there is a lot of BS about Amazon being spread around.

Facebook has a much more brutal up or out policy than our 1 in 20 culling. I also understand that Google managers have similar goals around identifying and terminating low performers, the main difference being the NYT expose on Google focused on your political correctness rather than your performance management processes.

I guess you can't really be bad at your job and survive in any of the well known tech companies.

If the TC is right I don’t see any problem working for Amzn. Interesting and challenging problems are there. True, benefits are not top, like free food, bike shop, etc., but still might be better than small noname company. As for crying I have never done it in my several years of working, there were times when I was really upset, but those situations may occur anywhere. I have been in one of toughest orgs, still managed to get promoted and grow as eng. as for pips, most of the times they are fair. I have never seen someone being piped for nothing. Though I am not claiming it doesn’t exist. Asshole managers exist in any huge company. I am not a big fan of Amzn, but this is my experience.
As for bananas I don’t care about them.

Well you could always negotiate for the top. But at the same time it is difficult to find sde3s, and the competition is huge on the market. So, not surprised of such TC.

Please share your on-site experience? Did they ask any DP questions? Was there any LC hard? How was the system design?
    Mar 10 3
    • New / Eng pHXp44
      OP
No, there weren’t any dynamic programming problems. One LC hard problem. The system design part was super open ended. One was as open ended as “design a translation service”. They just wanted to see how you pick it apart.
      Mar 10
    • New !=faang
Wow LC hard? I assume it must have been the bar raiser. Was it on graph, trees or a design question like LRU cache, LFU?
      Mar 10
    • New / Eng pHXp44
      OP
No, it was just one of the more challenging LC ones. I don’t want to say the exact one to keep some anonymity here.
