Anyone know what life is like in Waltham?
Work there now, marginally less expensive than Boston/Cambridge/Somerville. Good night life on Moody Street, but it is a big bedroom community and full of office parks. It's getting better with more being built, but it's much different than what'd you experience closer to the city.
Interesting thanks, what's it like working out there?
I do the reverse commute and drive 20 up to Winter Street. It's not that bad, only takes a 30 minute drive. It is starting to have some more city-like housing built (i.e. Luxury apartments) and they have built a new plaza with a market basket and a few OK watering holes. It could be worse, but it's mostly a place that people commute to for work and then go back to their homes. The people that live there usually work in the town, too.
Shit cold
I used to teach at a BU extension school in Waltham. There nothing there. Burbs are boring. Stay in the city. Commuter rail goes there pretty easily. I used to bike/take the train from porter square
^None of this is true. I worked in Waltham for about 4 years and did the backwards commute to live in Boston proper.. If you're young, you don't want to live there.. but if you have a family, it can be cheaper than surrounding areas.. Live in Boston or Cambridge and depending on what part of Waltham, take the #1 bus.. (I had a car, but only drove it when absolutely necessary)
Its a good suburb town. I lived in boston/jamaica plain for about 5 years. Had friends in waltham. Most constructions are old and you know new england's winters will be bad. Rents are ok. Overall a good place to stay and raise family
I would only recommend if you're planning to raise a family, personally.
Boring
Waltham is ok I prefer Watertown but prices in Watertown are a bit higher. Traffic in Waltham main st is a PIA but you have access to highways.
I lived on the edge of Watertown close to Waltham for about 6 months after moving to Boston. It was all right, needed a car to do most things. I rode the 70 to Cambridge for work which worked fine. The main street areas seemed cool but not a ton of things, but pretty much as soon as we moved we started looking to buy because of how bad you get buttfucked on rent. The housing in that area is pretty nice though. Can get some good space for a relatively moderate price. It definitely feels more suburby than city.
Awesome
