Hi, I'm looking around for a female mentor in tech in other companies. I have had/currently have a lot of male mentors and am looking to relate from a female as well. P.S. I DO interact with a lot of female leadership in Nordstrom but I'd love to just meet new people in other industries as well to gather multiple perspectives! Thanks! Please feel free to send me a PM :) yoe: 2 years!
On a side note, can you tell us more about mentorship? How do you get mentors? What do you discuss with them? Are these fixed schedule meetings or ad-hoc? How have you benefited? Do you maintain the relationships long-term? Are they mentors, coaches, or sponsors? I'm genuinely curious (and clueless), any help would be appreciated
Hey, it just depends. At both companies I’ve been at, there’s mentorship networks that you can work with to find a mentor. There’s a lot of coffee chats before you find some you click with. Those are the ones you maintain long relationships with. The meetings cadence is what you two decide - weekly, Bi-weekly, monthly. Benefitted by being able to gain new perspective on difficult situations and approach them in a different light as well as prepare for interviews. Also I think more than just career, a good mentor will care about your personal happiness as well. I still have difficultly finding people I want to establish a mentor mentee relationship with. It’s kind of like dating but you should always walk into it and be open to meeting new people even if they’re not in the same career path as you. You’ll be surprised at what you can learn! The best mentors I have were unexpected. :)
Thanks! Are these technical problems or more general (for example, organizational, career-related, etc.)? Could you give some examples?
Can’t exactly be a mentor - but if you’re open to talking and exchanging ideas we can talk. PS: unless you update with yoe - it’s hard to know who a good mentor would be. Mentoring would depend upon where you are in your career
Sure. That’s a great suggestion. I’ll make an update!
Okay looks like I can help you. Am fairly senior - atleast a decade more experience.
