Lowballed hard?

I thought everyone in the Bay makes 150k starting, but I've only been hearing back (from contractor positions, idk if this makes a difference) but they're only offering ~68k in the south bay. Wtf? This is poverty level I have only 1 year of experience in the field, software development

What company

I went from contractor to FTE with a manager that was open about salary. I believe they paid ~$10/hr to the agency.

Even with $10 an hour more, it's horrible for the bay

That’d be just shy of 90k, good pay for 1 YOE. The Bay is pricy, it’s a challenging place to live with only 1 YOE. Stay focused, work hard and get hired as FTE. Be strong during negotiations and get the pay you deserve. Good luck.

The only reasonable response to such a lowball offer is to counter with an extremely high offer

And tell the recruiter every time they negotiate you’re going to add $10k

I was also offered 65-72 for contract product management positions in the Bay Area. It’s not worth it

150k+ starting is only a few select companies. Not every company is Google. Sorry to burst your bubbles but the average new grad in Bay makes nowhere near that. The median is probably closer to $88k with lots of worthless RSU (afterall, there are lots of startups at end of day). That said, some tech companies like Lyft does give TC close to $240k out of college and so on. But those are not the norm. Blind itself is not the norm. According to Blind, anyone with 5 YOE earns $450k. If you actually believe that, maybe you need to do some actual research yourself.

Welcome to reality, where money doesn’t grow in the trees and worthy people (from a business standpoint) are actually rare
