We just found out that we are pregnant. And wife is about to start at a rather small company where its likely to be hectic / steep learning curve. How to go about managing this? I am worried about stress that might affect baby's health and /or pregnancy. I would have had her inform her manager right away had it been a big company or if she was an old timer. But now barely a few months in, just when she might be about to get productive she'd go on maternity leave (assuming everything goes well with pregnancy). What would you suggest we do? No visa issues.
As a pregnant woman myself, I’m sure she’s capable of handling this herself and managing that conversation with her manager :) Either way, she should tell her manager sooner vs later, so she can start thinking about her maternity leave coverage plans.
Let them know ASAP. You’re both working and you’re at google, so I presume money isn’t an issue short term (if she loses her job due to discrimination)
If she just joined. She won’t be eligible for FMLA. So she might not be eligible for long maternity leave.
Different companies have different policies so she definitely should check w HR ASAP on leave.
Be extra careful! It really depends on the team and culture. small companies have very different HR than big companies. Managers have bigger power and can violate the laws without being caught
Congratulations! Your wife should go ahead with her new job. If she finds it too stressful, she should inform her manager and request accommodations. This is her legal right. If she doesn’t have any problems, she should inform her manager on the same timeline as she would in any other job - sometime after the first trimester, but before it gets so obvious that pretending otherwise is awkward.
