Master/slave

Twitter feed reminds me again that master/slave terminology is racist and offensive to black people. But there were white slaves of black people, white slave of whites, blacks slaves of blacks, white slaves of Muslims and all other possible combinations (Wikipedia “White Slavery”). But why only black people are offended? I guess people of color do not care much. The only people offended are Californian social justice warriors.

I mean, are leader/replica (for example) so difficult to use? Those names are more descriptive IMO than master/slave. Even so, given no difficulty between the two, why would you want to choose the terms that people tell you are hurtful? Assuming this isn't a poor troll, that is.

People who find the terms master slave hurtful used in this context are just snowflakes. Why let them push their feelings on everyone else. The name is irrelevant

Microsoft FwwQ08 Aug 21, 2018

Dunno, just seems like basic decency that if someone tells you "that hurts when you do that thing," that you stop. Don't they still teach the Golden Rule?

While this is true it’s largely that blacks being slaves is the most relevant to our current social/political discussion. For one, black slavery is still in memory and the racism that was used to justify slavery persisted in the form of segregation till recently. It’s really crazy just how recent the civil right movement was. And even still black people are branded as felons and spend a long time in jail for a crumb of weed. That brockman swimmer rapist dude only spent a fraction of that for sexual assault. Without a single shred of doubt, if he was a large black dude who raped a woman he would not get that kind of easy treatment And secondly, it’s in very recent history. We often talk about the legacy of the romans or mongols when their legacy was spread by raping tons of women, killing tons of men, and burning down villages. Yet we casually talk about their “legacy”. Imagine someone talking about “legacy of hitler”. It wouldn’t be appropriate because the holocaust was very recent and many survivors are still alive today. Historical context is really important

Your comparison for rape is just awful. You have to look at the trials for both not just your personal opinion on how a black person who get charged

And blacks were first slaves of blacks and then sold their prisoners to Europeans. And a little over 200 years whites stopped the practice. So why are whites always at fault doe the history? Fkn stupid

A little detail of making slavery a hereditary state and dehumanizing the oppressed.

Yeah, new world slave-trade was qualitatively different than older slavery in Europe or Africa. It was more like conscription or even being a prisoner of war. This isn’t to say that ancient slavery couldn’t be brutal - especially in empires. But until the slave trade made human flesh a commodity, slavery was a caste, not a racial designation. In the Brithish new world colonies including the future US, slavery also wasn’t racial at first. Some freed blacks bought black slaves in the early history of North American colonies. But as populations grew and life expectancy improved, slavery became racialized and different laws were created for slaves as well as laws preventing white servants from associating or marrying black slaves developed. This was not done by “white people” because no concept existed at that time. This was done by wealthy ruling elites in response to revolts by black slaves and white servants. Many middle-level whites owned a couple of slaves, poorer whites would be encouraged to act as vigilante slave catchers, but for the most part the system was driven and run by a small but wealthy and powerful planter class. It was through this process of creating different legal statuses and rights that the concept of “white” and “black” developed in North America because to be a slave was to be black and to be black was to be a slave; to be white was to be a citizen. This was followed by Jim Crow which also set up a lower level of legal status that remained in effect until about your parent’s generation. So that’s probably why black people would correctly be upset by flippant remarks about slavery-in the US and in other parts of the Americas slavery and ethnicity became linked.

I will never use red black trees to balance a BST for this very reason.. will always use the more inclusive AVL tree..

Facebook iFWQ37 OP Aug 21, 2018

AVL is named after two Jews (or half-jews). Is that inclusion? I don’t think so.
