Men's watch brands under $ 500 ?

What do the different brands convey? Like you find Seiko at 250+ vs low cost Swiss brands like Tissot at 350+ vs other brands... Do they convey something deeper about the wearer?

I'm looking to buy a watch and have a Max budget of 500.

Nooooo. I mean conventional watches. I find it disrespectful when someone gets a notification and looks down at some stupid pink and yellow text, abruptly stopping a conversation.

AE is not for plebs. It’s like watches. There’s always someone out there with a Patek calling the Rolex wearer poor.

At the end of the day AE is a shoe maker which checks all the boxes and will make a shoe that lasts a long time. Just cuz makers like gaziano and girling exist doesn’t invalidate AE’s existence

They both convey that you are wearing a watch.

Not that some say finesse about you,
A mechanical swiss or Seiko say that you like craftsmanship over run of the mill.
Same thing like a Tesla versus a vintage long hood Porsche. Running and maintaining that vintage Porsche needs dedication and research that not everyone could afford to do it.

I spent $400 on my watch and $50 on a custom band probably seven years back and no regrets in doing that. Still it's my favorite.

If you want it to be meaningful then you should start learning about them and the craft behind Swiss automatic watches. If you get it and find interest talking about it with other watch enthusiasts, and there are a few watches which speak to you because of some aspect of their design or heritage, then you will be at the point where it is “conveying something deeper”. If you buy the one that someone tells you is meaningful then there is nothing deep about it.

Thank you. :) Although I'm not looking to become a watch enthusiast.

I understand cars better, for example. For a novice, a Buick or a Subaru are priced similar, drive similar, have the same seats, similar infotainment, maybe I don't need AWD etc. But the cars represent something fundamentally different. I don't want to spend 500 dollars and end up with the Buick of the lot.

My goal is not to look cool. My goal is to not look bad / naive.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Like all the nerds above are saying, nobody cares anymore about what’s on your wrist. So I think it’s better just to not wear one or get a gadget like Apple Watch and not make a big deal about it. You won’t look bad with those options.

Seiko, Orient, Citizen (I'm a fan of Japanese watches) - all have amazing options for under $500. Most high end watch makers have their movements made by ETA and other manufacturers. Orient and Rolex are of the few that make it themselves. Orient watches are a killer deal - $500 and less will get you Sapphire Crystal.

For a watch under $500 that gets the attention of watch people, look for the seiko presage cocktail time or tissot sea star 1000 on eBay. Otherwise any seiko presage on eBay would do.

They convey you can’t afford a Omega, Rolex, Victorinox, or a TAG. Or that you’re edgy and confident in showing that luxury brands will not define you.

There are so many watch brands now beyond the “classic” manufacturers. Check out some of the German boutique makers for some cool designs. The movements are all made by a few companies so there’s little difference unless you step up to Rolex quality (and price).

No one cares about your watch. Other watch fans will take a passing interest, especially if it’s an obscure brand or a rare piece, but at the end of the day buy a watch that makes you happy. Or buy a few different ones for different occasions — it’s hard to stop at one!

@op only a watch enthusiast can really figure out what you and your watch “convey”. The Apple Watch suggestion is about as original as a blank sheet of 8.5 by 11 ... and most ppl won’t know the difference.

Tons of conventional watches at that price point, including other brands like Orient and the lower end of Junghans. I think you will find that most enthusiasts will push for the Orient Bambino or Seiko cocktail time at price point due to dial finish and movement reputation.

Hope this helps. If not ask /r/Watches.

Shinola (Detroit brand) - Most of their watches are at or slightly above your max of $500, but they’re 100% worth it and are great watches that you don’t see everyday. I have 3 and looking for #4!
