How do you approach someone to become your mentor? How should one eliminate most of the possible “No”s before asking to be mentored?
On a side note: when approaching, make sure to be very clear why you chose the person, what you expect from that person, what your goals are, the timeframe and what your mentor should provide you. From what I’ve experienced people are very open to help others grow, but if you are approaching someone out of the blue it’s important to understand your rationale.
Thanks for the advice. One thing I am concerned about is... I don’t want to make it sound like all about me benefiting. Should I offer something to help the potential mentor? I feel like I should but I don’t know what to offer.
I would not offer anything. Don’t make it a trade. Actually, being a mentor can be valuable as well, for developing people skills. But if that’s a value for your mentor she/he will know that.
Iam not employed , where can I find mentor?
Why not ask your manager to assign one?
Thanks, that’s definitely one possible move. Any suggestions on outside of work? Like at a meetup or any network event.
