Microsoft Level 60 Offer

Recently got an offer with Azure in Redmond but the compensation looks like lowballing. Close to 2 yoe at Expedia. Asked for level up change to 61/sde2. Base: 115k Sign on: 10k RSU: 10k over 4 years (2.5k/yr) - almost negligible What is the good range to negotiate up to for level 60? 125-130k base, 30-50k sign on and 70-100k RSU? Updated offer: No level change..still L60 Base: 127k Sign on: 30k RSU: 50k Recruiter said there is no room for negotiation. It is maxed out for a level 60 and base is adjusted to reflect an average L61. Said competing offer won’t make a difference. Is it final then?

That’s how it sounded to me..peanuts

Google p7v88à Oct 18, 2018

Wow. They give college grads more than that. 3 years ago I got 115 base, 25 sign on, and 80 RSUs as lvl 60 at Msft., straight out of college, returning intern.

Amazon mxnnxnshsh Oct 18, 2018

Straight out of college they gave you level 60?

Google p7v88à Oct 18, 2018

Yep. Guess I was an impressive intern. It's not uncommon.

This is the first time I have felt good about the offer I got.

10k RSU?? Holy fuck dude...

Microsoft DOyu71 Oct 18, 2018

You're not going to get l61 with 2 yoe. Generally not much flexibility with base but you can try 40k sign on and 120k rsu. It is not uncommon for some new grads to get 120k rsu (generally returning interns or competing offer). You probably wont get that either, since you dont have a competing offer, but you may get somewhat of a bump from the initial offer.

Your best bet is to get a competing offer, Amazon or OCI. Not sure how much time you have.. Amazon does move swiftly in their recruiting

I have amazon a phone interview with amazon shortly. Is it a good idea to let the manager or recruiter know I have an offer from Microsoft to get directly have an onsite with amazon? There is no formal email from Microsoft’s end. Do I need it before conveying the information to Amazon?

Microsoft MIHG10 Oct 18, 2018

Tell the recruiter at Amazon that you are working against a deadline and have competing offer. They might still do the phone but will move swiftly if phone interview goes well..

Egencia lazy_lad OP Oct 18, 2018

Updated offer: No level change..still L60 Base: 127k Sign on: 30k RSU: 50k Recruiter said there is no room for negotiation. It is maxed out for a level 60 and base is adjusted to reflect an average L61. Said competing offer won’t make a difference.

Microsoft DOyu71 Oct 18, 2018

The base is very high for a 60. That's a good offer for industry. New college grads can get more stock if they are returning interns and/or have offers from fang, but even then, few get 127k salary (I dont personally know of one quite that high although I've seen 125). You're unlikely to get more with a Zillow offer, and if that's in sf youd need a 30% increase just to be even. Of course recruiters know this as well. It's a pretty good offer. I'd take it.

Egencia lazy_lad OP Oct 18, 2018

Thanks! Is it a good idea to talk with the hiring manager regarding the numbers? My only concern with the offer is RSU which I want to bump up.

Amazon tYds04 Dec 7, 2018

I have a similar l60 offer. I'm currently sde1 at Amazon and currently earning more (TC) than what they're offering. Are they inflexible on level change? What would be the best move?

Microsoft DOyu71 Dec 7, 2018

So, like I tell everyone, with vp approval, anything can happen. So yeah, people do get levels bumped but that's when they blow the interview out of the water and have strong support from the HM. Does that sound like you? Probably not or they would have already suggested a higher level offer. You can counter with something like I suggested 120k stock, 40k sign on (or something a bit above your current comp, remembering that you get bonus, stock and salary increase yearly at ms as well as part of your tc).

Amazon tYds04 Dec 7, 2018

Yeah probably didn't blow it out the water. Right now they're offering 25k stock which is just too low. Might have to hold out for a promotion at Amazon. I currently earn 110 115/3 and 26. That's 154 tc in the next 3 years just as an sde1. What they're offering is 120, 25/4, and 15. That's less than my current offer TC wise so would just be financially irresponsible to accept.

For level 60, it’s low. It will take 2-3 years to get to next level.
