Hi, I recently applied for a position of a Software engineer at Microsoft. They were interested in my resume and answered with a list of questions and of course there were salary expectations.

I wrote 110k/y and then they told they are not willing to continue. Is the number I wrote is too high?

Position:
Software engineer in Redmond, WA, USA. ( Near Seattle)

My current stands:
I'm Software engineer with 2 yoe,
Currently working from Poland but having a Ukrainian citizenship. I will require some first day accommodation ( help with appartments, etc). I will require visa sponsorship.

Honestly it's best to not write anything for salary. If they ask you can just say you'd rather not discuss it at this point in the process. If they choose not to move forward you just have to say thanks for the consideration and move on. There could have been 100 reasons they did this and very few are in your control.

The number you wrote was too low. Around 180k is the standard

What could be the reason? That didn't even checked my skills after initial resume review.

I have an issue, a Ukrainian citizenship. It means I will need to have visa sponsorship and pass through all hell of the USA immigration process. There are no shortcuts for me.

And maybe they were counting on lower TC, because Eastern Europeans are generally cheep. I get 19-23k before taxes.

A company at the scale of Microsoft shouldn't be constrained by visa costs. Don't try to transfer European comp standards to US, and especially areas like Redmond or NYC. It simply doesn't work like that.

Different teams have different requirements, maybe this team couldn't wait until visa process is done, which is a long process. There could be various other reasons.
Keep trying, getting an interview is just a numbers game. Try in a different team, repeat the process until you get an interview.

Try some position in Canada. They won’t
want to go through the H1 hassle and wait until Oct 2020 unless you’re a world class coder.

There are 1928 vacancies at the US and 8 in Canada...

You don’t need to worry about vacancies!

Why? There are only 8 vacancies to apply, and none of them are for me it terms of work experience.

If I had to guess, it was your English in your correspondence...

I use Grammarly for correspondence. I helps a lot. But if course, not having regular practice in English makes it worse.

Only tons of practice helps here. I’m not convinced Grammarly is not making things worse by taking some learning out of it. Reading a lot of well structured English helps (perhaps printed stuff)

Grammarly helps for extreme cases. When I know I'd definitely fail grammar check. What did you notice from my writing? What are my common mistakes?

It’s not grammar that catches my eye, it’s style and certain sequences. I think tools can help you make things look “legal” grammatically, but can’t prevent sentences from looking a bit artificial / translated.

Just apply again. Could be that the recruiter found someone else for the position.
