Currently an L60 at MS 2 years exp Base - 125k Stock - 50k per year for next 2years ( including appreciation and not original stock value. MS has done well.) Annual Bonus - 10% Amazon Seattle Offer SDE L4 Base - 145K Signing Bonus - 40K / 40K Stocks - 50 shares (usual Amazon vesting schedule) is it worth it, considering no HSA / useless 401k and no annual bonus ? Chances of getting to L5 in a year if good work ?
Not worth it. Too little stock
What to aim for ?
No dude, it is not worth it. Microsoft stock is bullish like crazy and Amazon stock is peaking out. It only makes sense if your current team or manager really sucks.
If I were you, I would’t leave MSFT for AMZN. Especially the money is’t that much of a jump.
Stay at MSFT and try for G/FB.
Is working for Amazon bad for career ?
No it’s not bad for your career.
Not worth
Thanks. Can you elaborate a bit ? If it’s not worth it, what to aim for ?
TC is 190k which is actually above the SDE1 band (135k to 173k). However, this means that you probably won't get jack shit when you get to SDE2 since you're above the lower range of that band (182k to 242k) and promos target the bottom of band. I would not take this and instead try to get an offer for an SDE2 equivalent position in the next two years.
I'd suggest you also look at the type of work you'll get to do.. pick one that is more challenging and is of interest to you. Having been in multiple FAANG companies, Amazon is a great place to learn engineering rigor, operational excellence, and hustle. The company has its own challenges/downsides but from an engineering maturity standpoint, I'd say Amazon is where I personally grew the most. This could vary by team and the product area, hence my suggestion to weigh the options on area of interest and personal growth.
Don't come in as an sde1. It will take you two years on avg. Stick for a year and interview, you'll get sde2. Ref. Somewhat similar situation.
Stay at msft for another year, keep leeting and try to L5 and g/b in a year
Dude your L4 offer is more than what I make as an L5! When you get promoted internally, don’t look for a higher bump since you are already going to be top of the band. L4 to L5 is doable in a year for industry hires. Obviously depends on manager and team but definitely doable.
It’s not even a 10% raise. Is it still worth it, considering the work?
I would say no, it’s not worth it. Try again for SDE 2. You are losing your team, track record, everything else as MSFT. It’s a fresh start with not so much green grass.
