Military pay: This is how much US troops are paid according to their rank

https://www.thisisinsider.com/how-much-military-service-members-make-2019-2?ch=99&share=8ca7f6de This is a list of the typical pay for military ranks, from entry-level Army privates who make $20,172 a year to Air Force generals who bring home $189,600. Base pay for an enlisted service member in their first six months comes out to less than $20,000 per year. But troops earn increases as they advance in rank and gain experience. The highest ranking enlisted Marine, Sgt. Maj of the Marine Corps Ronald Green, makes over $90,000 a year in base pay al Military officer pay is much higher. Newly commissioned officers make about $38,250 a year. Base pay is only part of their compensation. Most service members also receive allowances for housing, food, uniforms, and job-specific bonuses, many of which are not taxed.

They should unionize and go on strike

TC should include housing and food. I know a ton of vets who come out of the military that have a bunch of money saved because they basically have no bills and use the VA loan to get a house for next to nothing.

Agreed, their take home is basically entirely discretionary

Dropbox kMhc18 Feb 17, 2019

Also, if you have no student loan debt and building equity on a house, you really don’t need a high paying job to maintain a high quality of life. Just don’t be stupid with your money once you’re out of the military.

For one it includes housing and food. Also no one with a college degree would join as an enlisted person. Lastly, the prestige and power of a high ranking army officer make it easy more worth than an equivalent FANG engineer.

A LOT of college grads join as enlisted. That's why there's a tuition repayment program (like the GI Bill but for people who've already been to college). Some jobs like in the IT and intelligence disciplines have a higher entry standard for ASVAB scores etc and tend to be a bit too difficult for 18 year old GED-carrying Joebob from Kentucky.

Microsoft dfdgh Feb 17, 2019

I know a college graduate can join as a specialist, but why on Earth would anyone with a decent college education (comparable to SWE) join as an enlisted person?

No RSUs? That’s worse than Amazon... 🍆

They need to leetcode.

And I suppose Amadeus will take care of defense

Google SirMixAlot Feb 17, 2019

For all you prestige losers, military officer commissions blow any FAANG positions out of water

Salesforce Heimer Feb 17, 2019

What commission is that?

Google SirMixAlot Feb 17, 2019

Any

As they said, doesn’t include housing allowance. That can make a huge difference. Last I checked, housing allowance at Oakland Army Base puts an O-1 at the same after-tax base salary as a new grad at Google/FB. Obviously not the same as there is no stock, but can’t expect govt pay to match private sector. Also, might be worth it straight out of university if they pay your student debt. I believe it’s 2 years of ROTC and 4 years of service after graduation and you’re free to leave, debt-free.

It's not about money.

Rofl at everyone saying food should be included in military TC but it is generally excluded from TC at tech companies that offer free food.

There is a difference between having a good budget of 0 and the reality of food as a perk at work. If you absolutely maximize your work perks you can seriously reduce your expenses but that’s not the average at all

Snapchat RedSnapper Feb 18, 2019

At Snapchat employees get free breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. If someone was to put that in their TC number people would troll them. This is much more free food than I ever got in the military
