I was sde in aws, moved to gcp.

Will answer questions that don’t reveal identity.

Moved from sde2 to L4. Same level, similar comp.

TC: base 160k, stocks 550k, signon. 50k
Yoe: 5.5 all in amazon

Edit: One of the big difference I noticed is people in Google are very smart and humble, and it’s exactly opposite of Amazon.

Yeah I know, but for anyone to get ahold of 500k is a huge head start to retirement. I think Amazon has the worst vesting schedule of the big 4 too, so he’ll see the stocks much faster.

How much of your work at Amazon and Google is DevOps vs writing actual code? I have a feeling that the majority of "cloud" SWEs are really just doing DevOps/sysadmin work.

I haven't seen that in my org, not sure about cloud in general. But that would be surprising because there are sre teams, and test engineers for most ops tasks.

But realistically, don't come with the expectation of working on distributed systems, because most of the those problems are already solved. There are still very interesting challenges and problems though.

How’s the infra quality for GCP? How’s the on-site ops overhead compared with AWS? What makes a good engineer in your org?

infra quality at Google is top-notch, it is basically built on top of existing internal infra which supports Google products. Ops is usually handled by sres, so there is no dev oncall.

For being considered a good engineer, imho, google over-indexes on the project quality more than the project delivery. This was a big difference from Amazon. This also means that engineering practices here are much better. A good engineer would use best engineering practices and design a long term solution, which not only solves the problem at hand, but also thinks about other problems that can be solved. Apart from that, it is similar to other places, like you have to earn trust of other people, show ownership, so on..

Been in Amazon for a while, and lot of good talent already moving out to fb, google. The reason people are staying is because of stock growth. Also, it has become too much political with many teams doing busy work.

Amazon is now pretty chill in terms if work, lot of people are resting and vesting.

Amazon promo bar for sde2 internally is a joke, it’s still good for external hires. Same with sde3 bar for many recent promotions. So, it’s not surprising why many people will get down leveled.
