Considering moving from Bay Area to Austin. Planning to make an internal transfer via Apple.

I am married with 2kids.

My motivation is better cost of living.

Anyone who has done this or knows a friend who has done this, please share your experinces.

What do you like/dis-like about Austin. Do you miss anything about the Bay Area.

Austin is a wet sauna in the summer.
Nature isn’t comparable, as well as TC and tech opportunities.

What QiCh34 said. Atx weather is only good 3 months out of the year. The rest of the time is absolutely miserable. Terrible for allergies sufferers too.

I’ve lived in Austin for 12 years before moving back to the bay. Don’t waste your time in atx...
    - Very one dimensional town
    - very boring after the first 3 months of being there
    - much more expensive to live than most think
    - extremely hot and humid in the summer
    - February you can expect to be iced in (since the city doesn’t put money into the three days the streets could be iced over)
    - not many people from Texas, so you don’t get the true southern hospitality
    - school system for kids isn’t as great as they claim
    - culture of Austin that everybody loveD about it back in the day is completely gone
    - traffic is horrible (worse than the bay). Expect an hour to drive 2-5 miles
    - rain in Texas is no fun
    - breakfast tacos are about the only good thing there

If there’s an opportunity and you can swing moving to Houston instead, do it.
    - tech scene is growing there (although you’ll be dealing with a lot of amateurs in the space that think they know what they’re talking about)
    - the culture and diversity of Houston is awesome
    - people are super friendly
    - tons of good food
    - lots of good schools
    - big town, lots to do
    - humidity, rain, and heat is just as bad as Austin

Everyone thinks austin is good and great place to settle down (even I thought so).
    Things everyone don’t say:
    1. Austin is boring after few months
    2. Not many opportunities
    3. If layoffs happen, austin will be the first place to effect (atleast in semiconductors, this is true and everyone lay-off at same time, well some companies even left Austin)
    4. Summer sucks, it’s sticky 🤮🤮

Yup agree don’t underistmate the fucking humidity and stickiness it’s brutal... and also do underestimate when LRs happen and they want to ‘consolidate locations’ and they cut you because your in Austin

Thanks finally someone spoke. Lot of people haven’t been to Austin and they think just from outside it’s too good and everything is perfect. Try driving on Mopac or 360, you won’t miss 101 😊

Far from it. It's a soulful city.

Soulful? Austin lost its soul over 10 years ago. I challenge you to name something that gives Austin the right to be claimed as soulful...
and you can't say the vomit stain from Willie Nelson on 6th Street, that's been covered up by at least 100s of other college kids' vomit 😂

You’ll probably think you made a good choice for about 2-3 years until you realize Austin is only so big, is kinda boring (it’s Good for 20-35 olds who want to go party) and is surrounded by absolutely nothing for hundreds of miles. You’ll be paying for your family to get on a plane regularly to visit anything remotely interesting.

TC offsets way more the cost of living, so for me, as a single person, moving to Austin or Seattle isn't worth it. Your mileage may vary

I moved from colorado to Austin, you will not beat the temperate climate of cali, so if you like heat its nice. Also, allergies are a real thing. I didn't realize how terrible my cedar allergy was until I was figuratively dying after the first year. That being said,

I don't understand the 'there is nothing to do comments' that people are saying. There is a lot to do depending on your interests. You can find good live music literally any day of the week. There are several headline events that people travel here for that you can attend year round. Traditional sports is sparse with no major professional teams, but semi-pro basket ball, hockey and UT are plenty for me for the main flavors. The Columbus Crew reloc means professional soccer in the next few years, which I thoroughly enjoy. Formula One and other events at Circuit of the Americas are pretty awesome, you don't get those elsewhere.

We don't have 7,000 Amazon jobs open at any given time, but, the amount of company reloc to get out of bay area housing is srs bsns. I can't find the gov source to cite, but CompTIA has a pretty nifty map you can use to compare job density.

    https://www.cyberstates.org/#interactiveMap?geoid=0

Not nearly the churn here yet, which I feel probably contributes to the 'not as much opportunity' sentiment, but that seems to be a very bay area focused thing in terms of the severity due to the density. It is definitely going to get there in the next 5-10 years, especially with apples Hq2 commitment, and Amazons Brooklyn plans getting shot to shit.

Leander ISD/ Round Rock ISD schools are pretty legit. I live in a 2800 sq ft house that values at 350k 15 minutes from the current Apple campus and proposed Hq2 site.

All in all I love it. Great value for what all you get. Shop north side in Cedar park/ Round Rock area and take the train downtown if you are really inclined to go bar hopping with the college kids. I prefer the chillax vibe of the Domain with the adults.

That's very good deal. Usually they try to reduce your base . Glad you didn't encounter that.
