Need help deciding abt an offer vs GC ?!!

I have an offer from mid size company (1000 ppl ) which pays 10k more on base nd have around 20k joining bonus . I have my green card that needs to filled and current company says it will start now. The new company says it will start after 6 months. Work wise it’s same across in two roles . Should I give importance to gc processing ( which could / could not be delayed due to layoffs at oath ) . My visa expires in May 2020 . Location is same for both . Any suggestions ? @oath

Change. 6 months isn’t that long in GC perspectives. Make sure it’s written somewhere and not just verbally offered. Better you could ask if they’d be willing to start sooner. If you say that’s the only thing making you hesitate they might throw it in.

A friend of mine had an experience where the company reneged on their verbal offer to start the GC process right away and when he pushed they threatened to do so after his performance review. Get it in writing and ask them to show you the filing documents. Also ask them to do the premium processing if that is available

Work is decent but waiting for 6-8 months seems like a risk with current gc processing and way things are going with extensions . Also with smaller companies... gc process is slow is the general feedback I got.

Also make sure it’s premium processing. You will save many months of waiting.

Your GC is your first priority! Get it, then you are free!

Some companies use that as retention. Slowing down the process and all. Also are you happy at your work? That’d be shitty to stay another 2-3 years because you didn’t want to waste 6 months.

More than the base/bonus, understand what your new manager is like. If he/she is someone who a) has credibility within the org, b) sees you as a key hire, c) understands the concept of empathy; then go for the new gig. Having been through similar processes in the past, I cannot overstate the importance of thus dynamic.

Both the places want me nd see my contribution as vital. So I have explained them my situation nd new company said they can’t expedite gc processing as that’s there hr policy .

Then go for it. The protocol (of 6 months) is pretty standard. All the best.

Apart from the other factors it also depends on your country of birth. If you are from India or China then the wait time for processing of GC is also more.

Indian obviously

Bigger companies have constant reorgs. Mid size companies feel more stable to me. Since you have 2 years still you can take a chance with mid size company. You will have to wait for a supposedly long time to get GC, since you are already shopping around something tells me that you may be inclined to move.

Give priority to GC.. you will have lots of chance to earn $10+ more in future.. many are regretting, including me, is because they didn't give priority to GC...

You need to give full information if you want the right direction. Whay does green card needs to filled mean? I mean is i485 or labor or i140 If it is labor, i would suggest u to stay at current company till u get i140. Ask ur currect employer to match the offer. If u already have an approved i140, change the job

I still have perm filing to be done . I am at stage where the ground work for perm like prevailing wages etc needs to be done

Juniper zzq Jan 7, 2018

Note that a 6 month wait on paper will typically mean a delay of 1 year or more due to the amount of time required to gather documentation, application preparation and the labor procedures before the perm application can be filed. Your priority date will be more than a year out from now if you move. At oath it will probably be about 6 months from now. Given that you have two years on your visa, that’s cutting it close since if your perm gets audited, you’re potentially looking at a an additional 18 month or longer delay. You need to get your I-140 before May 2020. Typically visa extensions are applied for 6 months prior to the expiry date. If may 2020 is the end of your 6th year, it’s close. None of that matters if you’re unhappy at oath and the new opportunity is worth taking the risk. The additional 10k is not a big decision making factor. Post tax it’s nothing. I’d say look for opportunities in Vancouver. The gc bs is not worth killing yourself over. Would you be happier with being out of this rat race, less stress and an ok job? Or do you want to spend the next 15 years chasing after an elusive green card which will likely never materialize but just add to significant stress in your life? Don’t underestimate the amount of stress. You’ll have to deal with this every time you think about changing your job. You’ll have fret over your visa status every time you contemplate traveling back home. After a while it gets old.

Get your green card first, don't worry about 20-30k for a couple years.

With all the layoffs happening at oath , are you sure they can file your GC ?? After every layoffs there is a 6 month cool off period during which company cannot apply GC, do confirm these things . Also are you sure next layoff is not going to be soon, if yes that would delay your GC again

Oath random13 OP Jan 7, 2018

That is my biggest worry ... nd I will have to ask the lawyers about it ... do you know anyone whose going through gc process at yahoo ?

Oath random13 OP Jan 7, 2018

So I confirmed with ppl that gc processing at yahoo has started again . The cool of period was till November apparently
