Got an offer from a company and they're interested in moving forwards with me. HR wants to discuss compensation but I don't really want to share my salary because it's a lot below market value. What should I do? 1. Keep my current compensation a secret when they ask and only tell them my expected base salary. Not sure how to respond if they keep asking for my current salary though. 2.. Tell them my base salary and my expectations and make it very clear that I cannot join if they cannot match my expectations. It'd be transparent but It'd show tha I'm asking for a huge raise 3. Boost my current salary by 15-20k more when I tell them. not really what I hope to do --- what do you all think?
If you are in California, by law recruiters cannot ask you for your salary.
Get a competing offer of you can. Start negotiations on that offer onwards
This is sadly the only way.
Do Option 1 and get competing offers.
Are you in California. Assembly Bill 168 protects you and makes it illegal for them to ask you about your current TC. Talk about the compensation you wanna be at. Not their business how much you are making now.
You cannot be asked about current comp in NY either.
Don’t ever share current number , just say that I want to see numbers you offer and we can go from there It leaves a room for negotiations
Don't provide current salary tell them you want competitive market rates.
Don’t say what current is. Inform them of expectations. If they cannot meet and assuming lower than or equal to current, stay.
Never ever give your salary. Don't even say a number. Ask for a competative market salary that reflects the pay for someone in your industry with your level of experience. Make sure you have all of those numbers so you know what a good offer is.
Your current salary is irrelevant, don't mention it.
I believe they cannot ask you that? I ALWAYS inflate my hourly rate when entertaining the next contract!
Depends entirely on the state. Many have made this illegal, but this is not the case across the country (speaking specifically from the U.S.).
