I’ve always read parental leave was 1 year at Netflix, but looking at their Careers page they never explicitly say that and even say “most people take 4-8 months”. On Blind I’ve read mixed things about the pressure (imagined or real) to come back before the 1 year mark after having a kid. What’s the deal? Can somebody internally shed some light on why nobody seems to actually take the full 1 year?
Do you really need a full year? The team may have to hire someone else to do your job if you are gone for that long, then I’m not sure you are still needed, and you will need a lot of time to ramp up on the projects again if you do come back.
A year is a long time. The policy is "freedom and responsibility", but the 4-8 months sounds about right
The year is for people who sometimes need it, for medical reasons or otherwise. By making it available for all, the person that takes it doesn't feel the guilt of getting special treatment. Generally people don't take the full year if it puts their team in a rough spot. It's a negotiation that relies on communication.
What you should do is take a year and line up a new job at the end of it
Why not to come back?
