Networking into FAANG, does living in a FAANG city help?

For those who were outside FAANG and network your way into it with referral, how do you do it? So you start at a Tier 2 company, no constant LinkedIn spam from FAANG receuiter. Does it help to live in a major FAANG city like San Francisco or Seattle, to do in person meetups with other techies? What other ways are there to network and get referral into FAANG?

I don't have a CS background so my professional network has little or no FAANG employees.

For context I got referred at Facebook through the wife of a friend I met in SF. She’s a content strategist and I’m eng. it definitely helps to rub elbows with others in a city. That being said, after the referral it’s up to your interview performance.

The Bay Area is a revolving door. If you live near SF for a while it will just be a matter of time before you know people at each and every one of those companies. But, there is a high cost to living in the Bay Area too.

For those who live in FAANG cities would you say the informal networking helps?

If you ever researched about FANG interview process you will know interview performance is the KING. I’d say don’t think about useless tricks, focus on make yourself better at what you do.
