If you’re Indian and not looking for diversity, perhaps. But I have some Indian friends in Edison who lament that their children have no diversity — they might as well be back in India. Others are afraid to live anywhere else.

Long Island if you want to be surrounded by dbags. Queens or Westchester otherwise

Not good advice. Westchester has the highest property tax in the region. Full of annoying waspy and jappy rich-wannabe dbags. NJ property tax is lower, but other taxes are higher... a few nice towns. North Shore Long Island near Port Washington LIRR is your best bet I think. Will have access to both Penn and Grand Central Station (by 2022). Is certain to gain property equity if you choose to hold on to it. (Ex GM’er from Detroit in NYC). 500k gets you nothing in Queens... so not worth mentioning that.

I lived in Port Washington for a few years and loved it. Worked/partnered in a tech startup. Ended up buying further east on LI, but always compared it to PW and never won. It’s what you call a “bedroom community”, very quiet at night. Great because it’s near the water, and Sands Point estates are incredible. Sounds minor, but the PW library is the best local library I’ve ever known, it’s like a mini Lincoln Center. The PW line is the best LIRR line, because it runs every 30 minutes and is a clear shot to Penn without having to pass through the Jamaica station bottleneck. Believe me, that makes a difference! Manhasset and Great Neck are also on that line, you’ll find more condos there. Bayside at the edge of the Queens/Nassau border is also an option. Great Neck has a rather busy downtown area, I once had a software client there. Plus the medical elite of N.Y. are concentrated in that area, awesome health care. I miss it and I would return after this Seattle pit stop (pits, stop!). Seattle and the east side are nice, but I’d take NYC/LI/CT/Westchester/NJ any day over it. With LI being my personal favorite. No matter where you are on LI, the ocean is no more than 30 minutes away. Think about that for a moment. See what I found on #Zillow! https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/160-Middle-Neck-Rd-APT-5E-Great-Neck-NY-11021/2132934056_zpid/ See what I found on #Zillow! https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3830-Douglaston-Pkwy-APT-A3-Douglaston-NY-11363/2119450001_zpid/ I will say that Queens and Nassau are a bit more “provincial”. If you want to be closer to the city and still urban, then Hoboken NJ is still the place to go. It’s still a little gem among the big city.
