I've met my fair share of data scientists / analysts, BI / data engineers, QA / SDET / automation engineers who told me they would rather be a SWE though I always get the impression it was more about 💰 to them. And for those who wish they were SWE... what's stopping you? Feel free to comment on what role you're currently in.
Yes. DS currently. I'm too old to switch, 34. Also tried a leetcode easy and it took me like 2 hrs.
Doesn't data scientist with ML experience has lot of demand and great pay too?
It's not bad but SWE with same level of experience/education almost always pays more.
I'm happy with my career path at the moment. I get to work with customers a lot more, which I find fun.
Nah. Too many of them at my workplace that we relieve them every year
Nah... Sales is great at least where I am at. Great commission and don't have to work that hard
I went the opposite way. Started down the path as a SWE, hated it. Got into business dev.
HW pays close to SW these days though.
HA! You are delusional.
Nope.
DE-Interviews sometimes have a mix of SWE.But honestly I love what I Do.Though SWE have more job opportunities.I don’t think I would enjoy typical SWE work(building APIs,front end stuff etc)
Converted from SDET to SWE. The money is nice, but so is just about everything else.
Could you eleborate? Whats pro cons being sdet and swe?
Well as a tester, you are ultimately subservient to the PM or SWE org. As a result you are overall less valued, the pay is just a symptom of this. Also there's generally a glass ceiling and it seems across the industry companies are fine with letting users test, reducing the need for dedicated testers overall.
Why would I want to be a Senior Welding Engineer?
