^😂 "bad actors" = actual leaders who understand how to solve hard problems with technology.

The new Expedia regime are croneys and gross. They're awful ignorant techbros who think tech complexity peaks at the web service and could couldn't lead people into shallow water.

If you don't already know the CTO, SVP or one of their Bros don't bother because you're not going anywhere inside Nordstrom tech.

Be prepared to be treated like a child who knows nothing and moved around like a fungible asset from catastrophe to catastrophe. For your trouble you'll be calibrated in the stack-ranking system where your pay will be adjusted based on how much Expedia likes you.

Tech org is becoming more immature by the Expedia VP aquisition ( E.G.quarterly)

    YMMV 🤣

The narrative that "everything was fine before Expedia came and ruined it" is only true for people who weren't used to any notion of engineering scrutiny.

Yeah, that kind of thing is caused by leaders screwing up. They promoted those people and screw overnight the better engineers. It's bad leaders all the way down.

Lol, yeah that's it, it was a big drunken party before the Expedia dads showed up and started putting people in time out. 😂

This thread is infuriating. The idea that there was no engineering scrutiny before and now there is, is frankly pretty stupid. Riddle me this: why have we had some of the worst technical outages during the last two anniversaries if our tech bar has risen since the bad old .net/c# dumb fuck bad actor days?

Michael Mai couldn't engineer his way out of a wet paper bag. He is an out of date web dev hack and it shows every time he opens his mouth in front of engineers many of whom he's not fit to carry their water. They'll be gone soon and we'll see what real collapse looks like in the supply chain.

One of the best companies to work for. I personally feel that and my colleges too. Competitive pay, work life balance, not much peer pressure, merchandise discounts, zero Washington state tax lot more ...

    Work life balance=great
    Base salary=ok
    Total comp=really low
Benefit= uh, at least you get 33% off the expensive clothes in the store

As someone mentioned, they sell fashion, not technology, so if you are ok with lower comp in exchange for work life balance then this place is for you.

The technology org is very very bad, and getting worse. The traditional Nordstrom values have disappeared and are getting worse. Other parts of the company are good. I’d stay far away from a job in any software or tech team.

I was there for a couple years. You need to know it's not a tech company. They move slowly and invest in tech begrudgingly. Your career trajectory will take a beating. That said, the other comments are true. Good pay, but don't expect rapid promotions or big raises, low expectations, easy, easy. If that's what you want it can be a good choice.

Salary yes. I took a small salary cut when I left. Other comp will likely be less; perhaps a lot less.

Just left today actually. WLB is fantastic. Some teams are great. Pay is above average and competitive. Highly recommend to family people

Tech org is immature but getting better. It used to be a heavy. NET/C# shop with zero engineering standards and crazy inflated titles and egos. They are currently cleaning house and while the process is painful most of the bad actors are gone.

I will warn you that title inflation is still crazy though so you will meet seniors who know less than SDE1s

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard some variation of this over the years. "Tech org sucks/sucked but hey this latest round of tech bros from %techcompany is really turning things around”. There have been at least three sets of engineering standards since those times of c# on the website.

Nobody is cleaning house and there were no bad actors. Good engineers and leaders are the first to go when dumb fucks show up on site, which have accumulated to unprecedented levels over the last year.

I know someone who used to work as a buyer for Nordstroms and she seemed to enjoy her time there. I'm sure the culture depends on the team.
