Not joining the company after signing the offer letter

hi, I signed an offer letter from a company but I received a week after another more luxurious offer and I wonder if I can waive my first offer letter to accept new one. currently company(the one I accepted) is doing background checks but I wonder if it is too late to change my mind. any thoughts?

You can do anything you want , but there’s really no way to do this without burning a bridge with the first company. Although if the second companies offer is much better I think it could be worth it

The thing is my friend referred to me to first company and also another friend referred to me to second company the decision is very hard.

I mean your friend will likely have your best interests in mind . I wouldn’t take that too much into account , and give both friends a nice thank you gift for helping regardless of which one you chose.

They would do that to you in a heartbeat. You do not owe them anything except polite email that your situation changed and that you can't join them.

Not that hard. You should have told the second company you had a deadline. You're taking about burning the first company AND your friend. No go.

odds are you’ll burn a bridge with the first company and your friend who referred you might now look bad.

Verizon Media Atinlay6 Oct 5, 2019

Which is why you don’t refer people you don’t know.

It sounds like OP is friends with folks from both companies. It probably would have been advantageous to not know either of them in this situation.

It’s never too late but you will burn the bridge with the first company. It is too late imo to try and negotiate with them about the second offer, you either take the first one or you don’t accept it and do something else (take second one, etc)

This is my exact current situation. I have to make the call Monday and let them know I'm not joining. This has happened to me before. I joined an organization, I did a week. Within that week I was offered something much better. So I took it. I don't have any regrets about that decision.

Did you give 2 weeks notice or just jumped ship?

New

I did not. I was a week in, two weeks notice would have been a waste of time and they likely wouldn't want me to stay.

The lesson from this that ive learned to appreciate is that, once you give your word to somebody, no matter where go or attend or work.. always keep your word. Never burn bridges unless absolutely neccessary.. but even then, be cautious about it. Everyone will tell you, u can do what you want.. but Professionals, will tell you to think long term.. if you jump the gun at every "lucrative" opportunity instead of staying to your word, then youll burn your bridges rather quickly and nobody will wanna do work with you because your flaky..

Hmmm, fuck that shit. If I have to burn a bridge to get 100K increase in TC, give me the matches.

He didnt say it was 100k increase lmao

Second company has a much better offer and I haven’t even started with the first company. Also the second company has much better reputation and potential for my next career moves. The thing is I got referred to both companies by my close friends but I’m stuck with the situation.

Don’t play the victim card here.
