OPT for a PhD dropout?

Hi. I am a PhD student but I am planning to drop out next semester (and will receive a Master degree by then). Before that, I did an internship using CPT at the PhD level. I was wondering if I can apply for OPT at the Master level? The ISS office told me this and made me quite confused “Do be aware the completing a CPT at a PhD level could prevent you from using CPT and OPT at the Master’s level in the future.” Thank you

That should not be an issue. I know someone who has gone through the process.

Thanks for the info. Did the person you are talking about also do an internship while “officially” being a PhD student?

Yes they did

Lol I did two internships at PHD level CPT then got MS OPT. Don’t even think about it. It’s not an issue.

Cpt & Opt has definite time. If you have exhausted that time in past (lets say at bachelor level) then you can not avail again while doing second bachelor/masters/phd. If i remember right cpt is 12 months and opt is 12 months with opt ext if stem. I am not 100% sure on details but search based on this to land on correct details.

Thank you for the info. Luckily I did my bachelor study outside of the US. So I have not used any OPT. I only used CPT for one 3-month internship so I guess it should be alright.
