      So true! I’ve a PhD in physics with 15 YOE. TC ~ 190k.

      It's only in certain fields. I have a PhD in linguistics, and it has exactly zero value on the job market and might stir up resentment from co-workers, so I keep it hidden.

      I'd love to think that way, but I'm an immigrant in the country I live in and went to this country's equivalent of Harvard or Princeton. People have the false impression that I took a spot from a deserving local. At a company drinking party, "So, what's this I hear about you having gone to [elite school]?" is a terrifying thing to hear from a co-worker who doesn't think you deserve to have accomplished what you have.

      hmm not sure I understand your question. if you have 5 yoe from any big tech (fb, ms, amazon, etc) + a phd, then you most probably would get L5 at g. but if it's 5 yoe at a no-name tech company, it probably wouldn't move the needle too much. keep in mind that every individual situation is different.
