SWE, feeling burnt out. My org has terrible work life balance and even though I like working I want to do more than just work in my life. Like travel, paint a little, learn to dance or play music. I am married but we don’t have kids right now and the way things are going I don’t think we will have kids because we feel like we will not be able to give time to the kid. My like work but I feel more happy when work is not the only thing in my life. How is the work life balance in Europe? People who moved to Europe are you happy with the move? Is it worth giving the high Bay Area salary? TC: 300k (160 base, 140 stock and bonus).
Which org is this? I heard G has better wlb and it's a surprise to see this post. Can you also tell us which level you are and if other levels suffer similarly.
Similar question. Is WLB at Facebook London better than the MPK campus for Software engineering roles ?
Nope, it’s pretty shitty.
It's great here. But forget about your 300k TC
Care to elaborate? What’s different? Did you from from Bay Area or US?
No I didn't work in the Bay area. I live in Germany and it's nice. But there are many startup with no WLB, so it really depends on a company
Paris is ghetto as fuck
Don't go to Italy... great place to visit horrible place to live.
Prague. You'll be happy
Remember that Europe is a collection of countries with different cultures and languages. Where exactly would you like to go?
There are handful which I guess can be considered for the move: Zurich, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Dublin, Copenhagen, London(not a fan).
Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm have 25 days mandatory yearly leave. In Paris you will get another 10 minimum. Zurich and Dublin have 20 but 25 is the industry standard. In Copenhagen I used to start at 8:30 and finish at 4, but there's not much to do. Having children would fix that. The general pay is above average. + I had 10 extra days off. In Paris start is at 9 and finish at 6 with 1h lunch and a lot of time for coffee. It's an amazing city for visiting, but not so much for living. You get decent pay. Dublin is the same (9 to 6), but there's not much to do. Berlin has the lowest salary in the list. In Zurich you get the maximum in terms of salary and you have the mountains close by. Never worked in Amsterdam. For a family, I would choose Zurich, Copenhagen or Stockholm.
