Prior to Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft, what was the Big 4 of previous decades? IBM, Oracle, Cisco, ....?

Look at the original post, including examples. They’re referring to big tech companies, a la FANG.

And regardless, big4/big6 was shorthand for “big x accounting firms,” anyway.

Big 4 still refers to these accounting firms outside tech bubble. Techies just borrowed the term

Facenook, really? Big4 means biggest 4 market cap regardless of industry, and original post is wrong, your company should't be in it. The fruit company should.

They were running with "Internet changes everything" slogan in the early 2000, so this is not it.

It's more likely because two of the biggest ad agencies... errr... internet companies of current decade were still in diapers then.

Microsoft WAS one of the big tech companies of the previous decades. DOS? Word? Windows 3.1? All the wonderful products of the ‘90s....

Damn , unbelievable that not many mentioned SUN Microsystems - the company that created/developed Solaris, SPARC, Java, NFS, fantastic workstations like SUN Ultra, blade servers, MySQL and the list goes on.

Anyway, Big-N of the 90's and by that I mean where some of the most talented engineers worked.

    - SUN, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, SGI(Silicon Graphics, created Irix, OpenGL, basically anything to do with high level graphics had SGI behind it), IBM, Netscape(before their AOL acquisition and then branching out as Mozilla, open source browsers, JavaScript came from there), HP.

For those interested there's this amazing documentary from the 90's called Code Rush, it shows Netscape and MS locking horns in the browser wars and Netscape engineers working on probably the first version of Firefox. Some rockstar programmers in it include Jamie Zawinski(a.k.a jwz), Jim Roskind(designer of QUIC), Brendan Eich(creator of JS), Michael Toye, Scott Collins. Also features a young Kara Swisher( for those that do not know , she is among the most prominent tech journalists).

    Here's the link to it - <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q7FTjhvZ7Y" target="_blank" onclick="ga('send', 'event', 'Link', 'Comment', 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q7FTjhvZ7Y')">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q7FTjhvZ7Y</a>

It's interesting to see how they developed software back in that day, you'll see how they did source control then(6:03-6:15), and how Silicon Valley was like in the days of the dot com boom. Enjoy!

Netscape? Seriously? Tiny niche player. The OP question was about top 4.
And Yhoo? How the f they can be considered a "software company"?

  • Sun, HP, Microsoft, Oracle, Apple, Salesforce, Ebay, Amazon, EMC. IBM began it's fall into extinction around ~2003, so we won't count them for this exercise, having quietly fired 250,000 out of 600,000 employees since. Google and Yahoo were on the rocket starting around then, and of course each have had their ups/downs.

Since Microsoft has busted out of it's Windows jail and now openly supports Unix, Cloud, IP and most modern architectures. So if there's an award to be given here it'd have to be them. IMHO
