How do people afford $50k a year private K-12 school for children?
There are cheaper private schools as well. My kid goes to Stratford @18k/yr, I agree its not cheap Considering moving to an area with better schools
What the heck is private school. The rich are getting richer constantly. Can't do anything about it.
I don't have kids right now, but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibilities if my wife went back to work after having children and I continued to work. Two reasons, I could afford it (not saying it wouldn't be nothing to me, but I could afford it, particularly given where I'll be in my career at that age) and presumably my child's education is important and worth it to me, and it would presumably be a return on investment if they managed to get a full ride somewhere. Granted I've talked with my wife about it and she thinks I'm nuts. Her thinking is, we didn't have that and we turned out fine, so why should they get that or need it?
I mean, 600k as a pair where your house costs 1M (reasonably mortaged; not 30 years), retirement with 2 kids is probably doable but it will be very tight.
Or <600k with <1M mortgage and <2 kids lol but yeah, that's the general idea, particularly when you aren't spending on cars and vacations and shit.
You sound poor. Get that TC up.
Can't.
Well not with that attitude!
2nd gen here...I've been to the private school Challenger. My dad could afford it because he was in Yahoo during the golden years. Tbh I can confidently say private school was a huge waste of time, money and emotional health of the kid. Be smart and just buy a house in a good neighborhood and send the kid to a public school. This is the smarter, more profitable, and moral long term solution. If you need more info you can direct chat with me.
One kid private school can be 15-18k or send to public school and rely on outside classes. People in big companies can afford it
I have always wondered what is special about private schools. What value do they provide that's not available in public school ? Is their curriculum any different, are they taught more subjects/courses, do they get more targeted attention from teachers, as in better teacher student ratio, or do they get more resources like better facility/ internet/library/labs etc ? To me parental assistance and inspiration to do good academically is more impactful. Assuming I spend time with my kid and encourage/help him/her in studies, and the kid goes to a reasonably good rated public school in a good neighborhood, what value would a private school provide over that ?
I went to both private and public schools. And I think you can get a quality education in either setting. That said, the level of rigor and availability of resources in the private school I went to far surpassed that of the public schools I went to. More diverse curriculum, more advanced level courses, world class facilities (science labs, athletic fields, the performing arts), and alumni networks that open the door to opportunities. The culture of hard work and high achievement was also just much more pervasive as well. Admission was competitive, so everyone was there because they had worked hard to be there, and because they valued education. This could be a double edged sword. On the one hand it could be inspiring and energizing to be surrounded by so many smart and talented people. On the other hand it could make the place seem like a pressure cooker where you were never good enough. On the upside, once I got to college, the transition was relatively easy because I was basically doing college level coursework already.
A lot of this depends on the kid. Some kids might need a different env than what public school provides. Nice to be able to afford if necessary. Some kids will be just fine in public school.
Good elite private schools are feeder schools to certain elite universities....you go there to be socialized with the upper class old money families..... Good ones are $40k per kid....the rest are like cheap wine.....not worth it.
Well, they definitely earn more than 50k 🤣. If your household income is ~800k and have 2 kids, spending 50k isn’t too much.
