Probability of PIP at Microsoft/Goog/Facebook/LinkedIn
Been at MS for a while.. don't know anyone who is put on PIP. What's the probability at the above companies - and is it always cuz you just don't work or is it that hard to just keep up ?
My experience at Google was you had to go pretty far out of your way to get PIP'd. A guy was a L3 for 4 years on our team and I think they finally told him to get serious

You personal probability can be 100% or 0% - so average probability does not mean much. On Microsoft - PIPs are often done quietly so people around do not know - they think person just left on his own.
Great point. I know quite a lot of people who were forced out and they moved to G, FB and Amazon. All are doing better there than at Microsoft and all of them got promotion quickly. People seem to assume whoever are great performers tend to leave for G and FB but I have seen the opposite.
I think the probability is high at FB but low at others
At Google people are vary rarely pip'ed, maybe 1-3% of people are on a pip (was there for many years) At FB, a much larger chunk get pip'ed. Maybe 5-10%. (There's no target percent, it's just a higher bar) I love that my coworkers can be fired if they don't pull their weight. I'm mixed about me being easily fireable.
What does someone have to do at FB to not get a PIP?
Listen to what people tell you, ship stuff, don't coast.

LinkedIn rarely puts anyone on a PIP.

You’re very likely to be PIPed at Microsoft if you have a narcissistic boss. You can outrun a PIP for a few years with a good boss but if you aren’t being promoted you’ll be roadkill in under 4 years.
