Product designer portfolio review

What are interviewers expecting to see during first round or on site portfolio review?

I learned from a friend that Amazon has a special structure to follow and they don’t care much to let you finish your case studies.

What about Facebook, google, Uber, Airbnb or LinkedIn?

I can speak to a few of these:

Amazon: Reviewers will be looking for qualities that align with the Amazon Leadership Principles, and will be paying special attention to project outcomes. Don’t focus too much on process or methods.

Facebook: You’ll have 15 minutes to walk through a project. Again, process isn’t super important, but make sure you highlight visD skills. A lot.

Google: Google doesn’t have a product design or UX design role. You’ll either be evaluated for Interaction design or visual design. Showing working prototypes is really impressive to Googlers.

Microsoft: You’ll have dozens of phone interviews, a design challenge, and an 8 hour on-site. Then, the recruiter will ghost on you for weeks before pretending not to know who you are when they finally do get in touch.

Interesting insights! Isn’t the process important for design interviews lately? Since all the how-to videos out there talking about show your process/design thinking in a portfolio.

Depends where you interview. You should always outline your process... but be sure to focus most on results.

Very interesting...I had TOTALLY different experiences.

Amazon: huge interest in how I used data to make decisions. Lots of interest in process, working with other disciplines, visual & interaction design skills. Got hired at L6.

Facebook: catatonic interview process. They showed no interest in vis design, and asked weak questions about process. I think this was anomalous though. Most FB designers I know are super strong, this group was...not.

Google: lots of process and thinking talk. Loved talking to Google. Took a role elsewhere but really thoughtful people.
