A one bedroom apartment is usually about 3.5k/month in downtown. AFAIK the rent in East/South Bay for the same type is around 2-2.5k. Is the extra 10k-15k savings per year really worth the commute every day (if no debts, family)? Which area would you recommend?
I like to optimize for lifestyle. short commute, ample social and networking opportunities. if you like more space and saving money and weather, go east or South Bay.
If you hate city life and don’t care about wasting time, save the 15k. Otherwise I can not find you any reason to commute from South Bay.
SF is great if you love city life, however I wouldn’t live in downtown, dirty and unsafe. I recommend noe valley and Hayes valley. If you are lucky to find a spot along the muni line, it’ll be super fast to get to market street without living in downtown
If you are single and without kids, live in the city while you still can. You will never regret having made the decision to live right in the heart of it all with everything you could need right at your doorstep. Believe me, if you like to go out or have any social life whatsoever, you will not regret making the decision to live in the city. Yes, there are things to do in the East and South Bay, but you’ll find yourself in the city frequently for concerts and events. Much easier to be able to walk everywhere or take a much cheaper Lyft home at the end of the night. Take it from me (someone you don’t know at all) that a Lyft to San Jose from SF blows and is crazy expensive, especially during surge hours on the weekend. Even a HotelTonight is a minimum of about $150 if you opt to just stay the night. In addition, if you live outside of the city, you will probably incur parking or train expenses getting here. Unless your employer covers those for you, which many do. All in all, the convenience is well worth $1000/month, in my opinion. It’s probably be a wash in the long run. Besides, if you hate it or it weighs too heavily on your pocketbook, you can always move East or South, at least you gave living in the city a try. Don’t care about social life or having the convenience of living in a big city? Go south or east.
Oakland is way better option as long as you don't work in the South Bay. If you live by the BART the commute can be just as short.
That might be the rent downtown sf, one of those fancy high rises. You can go to SF suburb and find cheaper options right?
