A while back I scheduled a phone screen with a Microsoft HR. It was clear from accent that she was an Indian lady. During the phone screen, she asked me if I was Chinese and told me it was hard for her to figure that out from my name. I told her yes I am Chinese. She immediately told me that position was filled by someone who internally transferred and said will call me if something new comes up. Since then never heard from her. Anyone had similar experience ? Was she racist ?
Well... the left (Silicon Valley and Tech included) wants diversity and not meritocracy. Probably their quota for Asians is already reached, so they won't hire you :(. It will be subtle and soft discrimination, but you will see this discrimination.
“Quota for Asians is already reached”? Just real quick, this is a troll, right? Okay. Phew. Calm down everyone. It’s a troll. Crisis averted.
It's an actual thing. You haven't seen such quotas before in Tech companies? For similarity you know, in New York, the Asian community is suing colleges for putting an upper limit on proportion of Asian students in New York public schools. Again, I am not saying everyone is doing it but it wouldn't surprise me at all if some companies were doing it.
It would be wrong for anyone, even HR, to enquire about the ethnicity of a person especially at the time job screening
Microsoft outsources recruiting. They are not incentivesed in any way against Asians.
we use in-house recruiters
I call bullshit. It's illegal to ask this question, any decent HR person knows that. Anyway, Microsoft (and any big tech company) hires Chinese descent employees literally every day. If you got denied, it's unlikely because of that.
You could sue them for even asking the question. I’m pretty sure she didn’t ask you that question unless there’s some other context you’re deliberately missing. Like perhaps the topic of China came up, or maybe you asked her if she was Indian. Idk but something is obviously missing here. No way someone would be dumb enough to ask that question out of nowhere.
It’s an odd question to ask and it’s totally unprofessional.
You should have told her "No, I'm African" since your ancestors from millions of years ago must be from Africa.
Lol yeah I may be more African than Warren being native American
Is it just me or anybody else thinks that mentioning her ethnicity was totally unnecessary 🧐 Now for the more important poll. Is OP racist?
Ding ding ding, we have a winner!
Lie
Doesn't Microsoft outsource their recruiting? I doubt a recruiter will let his/her racism get in the way of $$$.
